Join us for our first Drum Circle and Dance Class, hosted by djembe performer Victoria Boateng and African dancer Asmina Turner! This hour-long event will take place on Monday, August 31st at 6:30 PM, and everyone is welcome, no experience necessary! We’ll be combining drumming and dance for a fun, interactive experience. For the first half hour, participants will split into two groups and choose between learning African dance steps or drumming rhythms in separate rooms. Then, we’ll all come together for the final half hour to bring the two together! 🥁✨ Admission is $25. Grab your tickets through the link in our bio and come dance, drum, and connect with us! Behind the scenes, before the stage. 🎬 This is the part nobody buys a ticket for. The counts, the corrections, the run it again. What looks effortless on August 28th is built right here, in a bright studio on an ordinary night, one rep at a time. Najwa dances the African diaspora, and every step we bring to Dancing the Archive carries a story we inherited. So we come back to the room, and we do the work. An inside look into the process. 🤎 🎟️ Dancing the Archive: Embodied Histories, Collective Power 🗓️ August 28 · 7PM · Harris Theater for Music and Dance Tickets — link in bio.

Today was the last day of Chrysalis program summer camp. It ended in a showcase and a used entrepreneur fair. Students were very pleased with their profits! Tomorrow is our last LAST day and our LAST Field Trip Friday... We are headed to Navy Pier!

Today we let our creative juices flow. We began the day by spreading craft materials on all the tables and allowing students and counselors to create whatever the vibes ushered them to make. Next our ice breaker asked social emotional questions and asked each person to dance their favorite dance move. Small groups continued to read their novels followed by brief math practice. One of our community members donated sandwiches and cookies for lunch. After lunch was African Drum with @victoriadjembeacademy and Dance with @ohthatsmina . We wrapped up with cool down activities led by our youth counselors. Somehow kids still found time to make slime.... Today was a good day

The Lineage Continues 🥁 This week, one of our Najwa dancers, Asmina, spent time at Willye B White park for their summer program teaching children the foundations of Makru, passing down rhythm, movement, and meaning the way it’s always been done: hands-on, generation to generation. Makru isn’t just steps. It’s history held in the body. Every time we teach a child this dance, we’re handing them a piece of West African culture and the legacy of everyone who carried it before us and trusting them to carry it forward. This is the work. Not just performance, but preservation. Not just art, but inheritance. Grateful for the Chicago Park District and spaces like Willye B White that open their doors and let us do it.
