FEELING THE PARIS BLUES IN HARLEM (2025) A film about a man and his time capsule. Directed, shot & edited by Ricardo Montero. 🎬🎬🎬 I shot most of this project back in 2016 as a senior at Hunter College. Ever since, I’ve dreamt of revisiting it, especially after Sam passed away from Covid in April 2020 and Paris Blues closed its doors. When @romeneal52 approached me to submit it for consideration at the LES Festival of the Arts, I knew I had to re-edit. The raws got lost somewhere in time, so I downloaded my student film off YouTube (as you can tell by the awkward graphics) and I did my best to re-edit, remaster and restore. This film doesn’t just show the evolution of Harlem and its dying small business economy, but my evolution as a filmmaker in the last 10 years. It is my time capsule too. It premiered on May 24, 2025 at the @tncfilmfest 🤲🏽Thank you @bodeghost.mov for producing the film, to @tonydow_116 @beautiful_journeylove @okarulove @jackglottman @tigarr369 for their music, to Rome Neal for giving it a chance and to the LES Festival of the Arts for featuring it and allowing me the chance to share it with New York. Thank you to my friends who came to see it and to all the ears I’ve exhausted talking about it. I love and appreciate you all.🤲🏽 And of course thank you to Samuel Hargress Jr. for sharing his hours with me. I miss you my friend. #samuelhargressjr #parisblues #harlem #jazz #independentfilm #harlembusiness #blackowned #latinodirector #jazzbar #newyork #shortdocumentary #lesfestivalofthearts #nyc

🎬Ecstatic to announce that my short documentary “Feeling the Paris Blues in Harlem” was selected by the Lower East Side Festival of the Arts 2025🎞️ • This film profiles Harlem legend Samuel Hargress Jr. and his iconic jazz bar, Paris Blues. Mostly filmed in 2016, four years before Covid-19 took Sam’s life and lead to the permanent closing of the venue, this short documentary captures a man in his time capsule. 🎥: It will be screened on May 24 at the @theater_for_the_new_city 2:30 PM 🎷🎷🎷🎹🎹🎹🎺🎺🎺 Director’s Note: This started as a project for @hunterjournalism nine years ago. I had to profile a business. My adoptive home of Harlem gave me the spot one frigid Valentine’s Day when my mom and I stumbled into a jazz bar after watching Deadpool at the AMC on 125th. What we found there was magic. A daily rotation of Harlem’s greatest musicians, free bbq chicken and rice for anyone who wanted it, and a man in his zoot suit, Sam. Paris Blues was a place stuck in time and it quickly became my temple. Over the next few years I became a regular and Sam became my friend. I made this film in his honor. As a way to capture the feeling of the sanctuary he created, and as a love letter to the genre it introduced me to. In the years since, I have randomly ran into every single musician you will see here at one point or the other. At a concert, at the park, at a bar. I think I’m haunted by the spirit of Paris Blues, and I’ll do what I can to make sure it continues to possess the musicians of Harlem. Thank you Sam. I miss you, my friend. And thank you to the musicians who made me fall in love with jazz over and over again: @beautiful_journeylove @okarulove @tigarr369 @tonydow_116 @jackglottman #documentary #harlem #harlemjazz #jazz #parisblues #samuelhargressjr #lowereastsidefestival #theaterforthenewcity #independentdocumentary #shortdocs #nyc #filmfestival

Thank you very much for coming last Sunday for a music Tribute for Jimmy Lovelace. It was intimate and very warm feeling. This past summer, I faced a challenging time when I went through surgery and lost my voice. I spent a month in the hospital, and it took a lot of effort and speech therapy to recover. For a while, I wasn’t confident about my voice. But last Sunday during a tribute for Jimmy Lovelace, I performed Round Midnight. In the middle of the song, one lady started to cry. That moment made me realize that my voice still has the power to touch people’s hearts. I felt energy of Jimmy Lovelace, Randy Weston and Billy Holiday. Thank you very much for your warmful support Ornithology Cafe, and everyone in the room to make this happen.
