What: Spinoza de Mokum Musical
Where: @bostheater Amsterdam
When: 9 July, 2026

A musical about Baruch 'Bento' d'Espinoza, the Portuguese-Jewish philosopher who changed the way the Netherlands thinks about freedom and faith. He was a radical freethinker, which caused the Jewish community to ostracize him, for to him, religion was a dictate of earthly, bossy little men: the rabbis and bishops. "Everything excellent is as difficult as it is rare," is one such quote of his. Not light fare? Well, there is plenty of perspective in 'Spinoza de Mokum Musical'. The prostitute Madame X, played with sharp wit and disarming disarming skill by @malougorter ('Oogappels'), for example, as the narrator of the story, provides many a witty remark. But Spinoza's sister Rebecca (a powerful performance by @sarahjanneh) is also shrewdly humorous in her reflections. The lead role is played by @olafaittami, who speaks with his beautiful eyes when he is silent. Expressive and fragile, he plays the sometimes despairing but always passionately thinking Bento Spinoza, who allows himself to be seduced by the arithcratic Simon, a surprising role played by De Slimste Mens winner @joesbrauers. I saw the first half of Spinoza on Saturday, June 27, but the performance was interrupted halfway through due to a thunderstorm. In the repeat performance on Thursday, July 9, I noticed many new details in that first half. But it was the second half that made the biggest impression. During the period of the plague and the end of the liberal society of the De Witt brothers, Spinoza blossomed into a true National Thinker. A young man, despairing over his own loneliness and the affection of Simon, reduced to a pariah, who only inspired many long after his death. From Multatuli to Nietzsche and from Einstein to Kant. The musical is a surprising and worthy tribute to the man who largely shaped the political and democratic landscape of our country. A true spectacle, it is a shame that it will already be over after July 11.
