![Jaffa, General view with Tel-Aviv - c.1920s
מראה כללי של יפו ותל־אביב
Publishers: ELIAHU BROS - JAFFA & TEL-AVIV - # 243 - E 60002
הוצאת האחים אליהו – יפו – תל־אביב וחו"ל
STAMP: An EEF official British Mandate postage stamp valued at 8 Milliemes.
OVERPRINT: "Palestine" in the three official languages of the mandate period: English, Arabic (فلسطين), and Hebrew (פלשתינה (א"י)). [Palestina פלשתינה the abbreviation (א"י) stands for ארץ ישראל (Eretz Yisrael / Land of Israel)]
NB: The EEF was a British Army command formed in Egypt during World War I. Led by General Edmund Allenby, this force marched north and captured the region from the Ottoman Empire between 1917 and 1918.
The overprint was added when the official civilian British Mandate of Palestine was established in 1920.
The EEF stamp designs were so reliable that they remained the standard layout for nearly a decade until they were finally replaced by pictorial stamps in 1927.
POSTMARK/CACHET: JAFFA - OCT. 1925
RECEIPIENT: Mlle Jane Mureane - 57 bis rue Rivay - Levallois-Perret - France
"Embrasse" [AV ?]- (Kiss/Hug)
ELIAHU BROTHERS: Matityahu and Yossef Eliyahu were born on the Greek island of Corfu to Malka and Abraham Eliyahu, who were involved in the early regional Zionist movement. Eager to join the developing Jewish community in the Levant, the brothers immigrated to the Ottoman Empire in 1914 and found work in the local printing trade in Jaffa.
During WWI they were deported along with thousands of other Jewish residents of Tel Aviv and Jaffa. Because they held Greek citizenship, they were treated as enemy nationals by the Ottoman Empire.
They endured harsh conditions as refugees in Hama, and later Istanbul, before returning to Jaffa.
Upon returning, they opened a storefront in the city of Jaffa & another in the city of Tel Aviv, on Nahalat Binyamin Street, later moving to Herzl Street. They were the official importers for the world-renowned Parker Pen Company.
Eliyahu Brothers Postcards publishing company was active primarily between 1920 and 1939.
