The Old Melbourne Gaol ⛓️👻🕸️⛓️

Built in 1839 and was an active prison from 1845 until 1924, it is made of impenetrable blue stone and and has held many of Australia’s most notorious criminals such as Ned Kelly and Frederick Bailey Deeming. It also held 133 hangings.
One of the most interesting parts of the execution practice here at this prison and probably many others was that after they had hung the person, they made a death mask of them (no pictures out of respect for the dead) for the study of the phrenological study of hanged felons.
It wouldn’t be a a complete trip for me without some spooky time and this was just incredible. I found the whole experience super chilling but also moments were incredibly peaceful. Of course this goes without saying but there are many souls trapped in the walls of the prison and I could feel them, some of them bad energy and some who where no incredibly sorry for the crimes they committed. A great night tour with an incredible atmosphere and an experience I will never forget 😅🕸️

Some holidays come with a beach. Others come with a prison cell, a ghost story or a rather sobering history lesson. 👀🔒

My latest for The Renaissance Traveler explores why we pay to walk through history’s darkest places -- from Latvia to Auschwitz, and the curious things these journeys reveal about us.

Dark tourism: not your usual holiday flex. 🖤
