Good news! We’ve added more spots for our Introduction to Japanese Sashiko Stitching Workshop this Saturday, October 17 from 2-5pm! 🧵

Sashiko is a traditional Japanese hand-stitching technique originally used to reinforce and strengthen textiles. Today, it’s beloved as a meditative craft and striking art style! This workshop is a great opportunity to learn sashiko and make your own hand-stitched coasters. No sewing experience necessary!

There is a quiet, deliberate shift happening across the Bay Area. In a world dominated by glowing screens, endless notifications, and the relentless hum of the digital age, more people are finding themselves drawn back to the tactile. We want to touch things. We want to make things with our own hands. On this week’s episode of Bernal Connect, we sat down with Katie Furukawa Bonifacio, the creative force behind Old River Design. Sweet treats live in this pouch. Also Oldest Son won me these claw machine cuties. They are my travel buddies.

Fun times with Katie, Natsumi, Sarah, and of course Sachi! Feeling very grateful to have friends full of creative ideas and dreams they’re daring enough to make into reality - Katie planned & hosted this pop-up market, Natsumi’s been taking her art practice to the next level with pop-ups, and Sarah is opening a quilting shop in SF soon - sky’s the limit!

Extra thanks for having me be a part of Sachi’s Sunny Space, Katie & Sachi, and for the fun Upcycled Block Printed Patch Pocket Tote collab!! 🧡 And thanks to Glen for helping me with the pop-up and the friends and family who came to support!

My heart is still full from yesterday’s inaugural Sachi’s Sunny Space 🐶☀️ There’s nothing like being surrounded by extremely talented artists and makers as well as friends, family and community members showing up to support with their presence. This is exactly how I want to keep spending my time living, and I can’t wait to create more memories with my friends through art.

🙏 to:
Katie, for inviting me to showcase my artwork and live paint outdoors and for always being an amazing friend I can never stop looking up to ☺️

Naomi, for being such a supportive friend and for teaching me how to block print in the first place. None of this happens without you. Looking forward to spending more time with you and Glen!

Sarah, for your sweet comments while I painted (and for bearing witness to the menacing dog eye stage 😂). Sarah is soon to be a proud store owner of her own brick-and-mortar quilt shop @citymadequilts here in the city, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for her 💛

I was also extremely touched by my friends from various circle groups for stopping by. You guys are really the best…!

This was actually my first painting in two months, and I’ll admit I was a little nervous going in. But what fuels me is all the attention, good vibes, and that little voice that says “just go for it, you never know until you try.”

More art, more community, more memories coming 🎨

☀️ Swing by Sachi’s Sunny Space tomorrow from 11am to 4pm in Bernal Heights SF and pick out your very own Sachi Upcycled Patch Pocket Totes - Limited Edition of 19 (and 7 are already spoken for 😱)!! The remaining 12 will be available tomorrow for $80 each!

Our @oldriverdesignco x @naomimarikocreates crafty collab was inspired by Katie’s pup, Sachi, and handmade by Katie & Naomi!

The totes:
🧵A unique and sturdy sewn pocket design using a selection of Katie’s upcycled cotton fabric
🎨 Hand block printed artwork designed, carved,
and inked by Naomi on vintage denim

We had so much fun creating together and can’t wait for everyone to stop by tomorrow in San Francisco for Sachi’s Sunny Space, a pop-up market with Sachi’s friends! Shout out to @natsumipamela.art for hanging with us during our late night sewing session, Natsumi will have her beautiful art available tomorrow too!

❤️ Katie & Naomi
