When I started @aplaceforusproductions one of the top pillars of our structure was the idea of mentorship - of selecting actors who embodied the values and standards we wanted to perpetuate. I asked Kai Chapin to join the company in a mentorship role very early in the company’s formation. As part of that role, he was asked to take on lead roles during the company’s first five years in order to establish and model our standards of excellence and master craftsmanship for other company members, which continues as he also steps into the role of artistic director this year. This structure was intentionally designed to provide clear, consistent examples of the level of work, discipline, character and professionalism expected as the company grows and develops new talent.

I am so thrilled that this same philosophy is guiding our work this season. In The Miracle Worker, my teen interns Olivia and Adrienne are stepping into mentorship roles of their own—learning not just how to perform, but how to lead, support, and set an example for others as they they work in mentorship lead roles in our teen production class. These choices are never accidental. At A Place For Us Productions, we believe growth happens fastest when skill is modeled, standards are visible, and responsibility is earned through trust. This is how we build a company that lasts: by investing in people, teaching by example, and creating clear pathways for artists to rise.

I am so proud of all the hard work they have both put into this challenging piece and for everything they do behind the scenes to make this company what it is. Most of all, I am so proud that we can confidently claim that we host some of the greatest talent in Kansas City, not by luck or chance, but by hard work and commitment to excellence and character first, always. You’re not going to want to miss The Miracle Worker May 1-2, so mark your calendars!
