“Black” Agnes Randolph (1312-1369) was the Countess of Dunbar and a legend in her own lifetime. When the English thought her castle was an easy hit during the Second War of Scottish Independence, she took it as a personal challenge and made her enemies regret ever darkening her doorstep. #scottishhistory #historichighlanders #reenactorsofinstagram #mainehighlandgames

Look at this beautiful (and kinda adorable) medieval-style portrait that our folklorist, Kaylee, made of our Corresponding Secretary, Olivia, in her early-14th century kit! She even included Olivia’s axe (her demo weapon of choice)! #reenactorsofinstagram #medieval #medievalart

Usually Glasgowlands is boiling hot and sunny, so yesterday was a shock! We even had some members of the public take shelter in our tents while we battled the puddles that were trying to take down our whole encampment! #reenactorproblems #livinghistory #highlandgames

Meet Historic Highlanders! We are a living history group based in New England, traveling to every Highland Games and Scottish festival we can to answer your most vital questions about Scottish daily life in the past! Formed over three decades ago by a small group of history enthusiasts, we have blossomed into a sizable crew of devoted history nerds who work hard to research and share every tidbit of Scottish history we can.

Why do we do this? Well, whether you’re of Scottish heritage looking to reconnect with your roots, or just curious about the culture behind kilts, bagpipes, and the Tartan Army, we want to share with you what makes Scotland so interesting and unique. People are often fascinated by Scotland, and it’s no surprise why!

How do we do this? Well, from roughly November-May we engage in research into the topics that interest us most, from folklore and historical trade to woodcarving and farming, to even things like cooking and fabric dye; then from June-October, we travel around New England to various festivals to share what we’ve learned, work on ongoing projects and give demonstrations to the public. And this is all in addition to our day jobs!

Want to see us in action? Have a burning question? Just wanna hang out with some absolutely MASSIVE dogs? Come find us at nearly any Highland Games in New England! Want us at your event? Contact us here or on Facebook! #livinghistory #scottishculture #reenactorsofinstagram #highlandgames #historynerds
