Olive Watherston 🇳🇿 — a player whose journey from the farms of Arrowtown to the international Black Ferns Sevens stage is one of the most exciting stories in New Zealand rugby. Olive began playing tackle rugby as a teenager and made her representative debut for Otago Spirit in 2021 while still at Wakatipu High School, before moving north to pursue her rugby dreams with Bay of Plenty and the Volcanix. She was also contracted to Chiefs Manawa in Super Rugby Aupiki, although injury prevented her from taking the field. After representing New Zealand at development level and gaining valuable experience in international sevens and the Hong Kong 10s, Olive finally made her Black Ferns Sevens debut during the 2024–25 SVNS season. She wears Black Ferns Sevens #82, and has quickly established herself as a physical, fearless and hardworking forward who can play prop or hooker in the shortened format.

Since making her international debut, Olive has become part of a Black Ferns Sevens side that continues to dominate the world stage. She was involved in tournament-winning campaigns in Cape Town, Singapore and Perth, and in 2026 scored her first senior international try in the Black Ferns Sevens’ huge 64–0 victory over Great Britain before producing important defensive moments in the Singapore and Perth finals. She has already played six SVNS tournaments and collected multiple tournament titles, while also spending time playing sevens in Japan with the Mie Pearls alongside Sarah Hirini. From tackling sheep on her family farm to tackling some of the best rugby players in the world, Olive’s story is one of determination, toughness and chasing a dream — making this Black Ferns Sevens #82 autograph a very special addition to my rugby collection and another piece of the growing NZRugbyVault archive.

People often ask if the sisterhood is really what it looks like.

The truth is, it’s more!!!.

It’s a legacy passed down through every mana wāhine who came before us. It’s being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s knowing that no matter the result, you never stand alone.

We fell short of the ending we wanted this season, but this team has never been defined by a single tournament. 6 wins from 9 this season is something to be proud of, but the people, memories, and sisterhood we’ve built along the way mean so much more!.

Grateful to always represent 🖤🌿
