Exactly one year ago today, I took the flight that changed my life.

Leaving behind my life in Italy, my beautiful family, my friends, and my comfort zone was HARD. But the little Elisa had always dreamed of moving to the US and exploring the country, and she finally did it.

I first heard about exchange programs in fourth grade, and from that moment, I promised myself I would go at 17. And I did. It was the best decision of my life.

One year ago, I wasn’t fully happy, I felt lost. But on the other side of the world, I found myself again, I felt so alive!

I met AMAZING people, found a second home, a second family, and made wonderful friends.

When I found out I was going to North Dakota, I was scared. But it became a beautiful surprise. I ended up loving everything about it, especially the people.

Thank you to my host family and friends. You welcomed me with open arms and so much kindness. I lived my American Dream with you, and I’ll never forget it.

Thank you for every single moment we shared. I love and miss y’all so incredibly much.

Leaving America, my dream, my happy self, my beloved Fargo & Harwood, my second family, and all my friends was heartbreaking. But if the goodbye hurts, it means the time was worth it. And it was.

I also had the chance to travel and meet people from all over the world. Now I have friends everywhere, and I miss you all so much too.

America, I’ll love you forever.

My exchange year: Aug 20, 2024 – June 16, 2025: The best chapter of my life.

I was brave enough to leave, and I’d do it again and again.

Thank you, host family, for opening your hearts and making me feel part of your amazing family.

Thank you to every friend who made me laugh and never feel alone.

Thank you to my family in Italy and to everyone who supported me from afar, this dream was possible thanks to you.

And thank you to myself, for never giving up.

As Jasmine said: “It’s not a goodbye, it’s a see you later.”
And I can’t wait for that moment.

Forever grateful. 🇺🇸🫀
