An avoidant attachment style is an insecure relationship pattern characterized by extreme self-reliance, emotional repression, and a strong discomfort with intimacy or vulnerability. People with this style often grew up with emotionally unavailable, dismissive, or neglectful caregivers, which taught them that relying on others is unsafe and that they must manage their own feelings alone. In adult relationships, they tend to pull away, shut down, or use deactivating strategies—such as focusing heavily on independence or finding minor flaws whenever a partner tries to get too close. Though they often act as though they do not need deep connection, their withdrawal is typically a subconscious nervous system defense mechanism against the fear of losing autonomy or being rejected.

I met Shawn Regruto for the first time through an email he sent for his Writer’s Group. He emailed a time, a place, and to bring your pages and a snack. This group didn’t cost money to join. It was just there to support writers. Wednesday nights became my favorite night of the week. We’d start at 7:30 and read until midnight, sometimes later. Shawn built a community, a community where you have to bring pages
but mostly you just have to bring yourself, and that was enough. It was better than any writing class I had ever taken. And Shawn was a brilliant writer himself. He went to @tribeca in 2004 with his “Point&Shoot” and I hope we get to see his “All You Can Eat” on the big screen someday, too.

I had dreamed of going to @sundanceorg , and Shawn went every year. Shawn used to always say, “If you’re a plumber, you go to the plumber convention.” So in 2019, ten of us writers from group packed our bags and flew to Park City, Utah. We did it again together in 2020. We saw three movies, sometimes four a day. We danced, we laughed so much, and we ate. Those are some of my cherished memories of Shawn.

With this film, Funny/Not Funny, we spent a lot of time writing the story together at Essex Market. And way before we were ready to move into production, we held a casting. We set up a camera on the second floor of a building in Tribeca and taped some actors. I guess we were looking for actors to somehow inform the script, but I think we just wanted to move this project forward. Shawn wanted to direct Funny/Not Funny and I’m so sorry that we weren’t able to make that happen before he passed. But to have the premiere in his city where his mom can walk the red carpet for him is really special, and I am so grateful that can happen.
