That’s a wrap on the Haida Gwaii portion of the Marbled Murrelet shoot 🎥

What a rollercoaster of emotions it was filming these crazy diving birds. They proved to be on tough little creature to film. Luckily we had an all star team and certainly made the most of it!

We’re all Looking forward to sharing what we have been cooking up next year 😉

In Search of the Fog Lark

The fog is dense, but the forest is denser. Bears stroll the beaches unhurriedly, turning up algae-covered stones. Deer eyes flash at the periphery of a headlamp. Moss dampens footsteps throughout the old-growth. Eagles and ravens glide from snag to bough, unbothered and with ease.

This is Haida Gwaii.

Home to the Haida people for centuries, and brief haven for The Rambler, film crew HQ for a month in late spring. Here to film a small bark-coloured seabird, the Marbled Murrelet, @moonfishmedia and @wildbusfilms work around the clock in conjunction with Sonya Pastran, a UBC researcher doing her PhD on the species’ nesting habits. Sonya’s and the film crew’s aim is one of the same: to find a MAMU nest high up in a tree. To say it’s like finding a hay coloured needle in a haystack is an understatement.

Long nights of tagging, early mornings of ground truthing, and countless hours behind a camera trying to get anything but a bird butt on film, and the verdict is clear: these birds don’t want to be found. That’s their whole shtick. And that’s why their story is so unique.

Marbled murrelets spend most of their time at sea. They eat forage fish and crustaceans, diving and flying underwater as they would in the air, for the majority of the day. At dawn and dusk they undergo a shift change. The ones on the water bumble off towards land, sometimes flying over 50km inland, to find their mate in an old-growth spruce, hemlock, or cedar. They greet each other silently, only calling when first entering the radius of their tree, then crash land onto their chosen bough, and then they nestle onto the mossy branch for their twelve hour shift. This is especially important when an egg is laid. The partner whose egg-sitting duty is over takes off towards the ocean, to fish and commune with other MAMU. Then it happens all over again. This occurs until the chick is hatched and fledged. Where they go after that I’m not sure. I should have asked Sonya…

More on MAMU coming in a few days on my website.
Thank you’s in the comments!

That’s a wrap, baby. Amazing 3500+ mile journey. Two weeks with a “cracking shoot team” sharing opinions, culture and ceaseless good humor. Here’s a smattering from always gorgeous California.

Filming proboscis monkeys for the Crowded Continent episode of BBC Asia, back in August 2023.

@samrowleywild and I were tackling the angles from the bank, whilst @emma.hatherley and @ollieinstagram worked from the water. For the final week, we were lucky enough to be joined by @kelvinmorriss who was filming from the air.

@sheisvanya flitted between teams as the organisational glue that allowed us to do our jobs.

It’s been an amazing process to see these images come to life in the edit, brilliantly done by @nickjcarline, and voiced by the big man himself - @davidattenborough
