As part of OCAD University’s 150th anniversary celebrations, Material Art & Design (MAAD) and @ocadu_design are excited to announce that three alumni are participating in the National Student Design Competition at the Canada Unites Future of Fashion Awards & Industry Event! (@canadaunites.live). Happening from Sept. 23–25 at the @apparel_textile_sourcing Show in Toronto, the event brings together emerging designers, fashion schools, and industry professionals from across the sector. Come out and support Kayla Bullen @_kaybul, Mike Freitas @mike.jfm, and Omar Tarek Zayed @omar.t.zayed, as they share their work and represent OCAD U and MAAD. Image 1: Kayla Bullen is the designer behind KAYBUL, a contemporary workwear brand shaped by their seven years in the Canadian fashion industry. Their practice explores form and function as integral parts of the making process, with a focus on how each can inform and enhance the other. Taking influence from their father, a mechanic, Kayla approaches workwear through a functional lens while remaining interested in how form can be pushed to enhance a product without sacrificing its purpose. Image 2: Mike Freitas Vancouver-born, Mike Freitas is an award-winning writer and artist. Moving to Toronto for school and having just graduated from OCAD University, Mike returned to Vancouver and continues to enjoy creating written and textile works from personal experiences, timely issues, and the strangeness of life, while spending time out and about at local events, indulging in film, cafes, and city exploration. Image 3: Omar Tarek Zayed is a Toronto-based textile artist and designer whose practice explores the relationship between traditional textile craft and contemporary design methodologies. Working primarily with natural dyeing, shibori, and silkscreen, he develops hybridized approaches to both womenswear and textile-based art. Omar is currently an Artist-in-Residence at Harbourfront Centre Textile Studio, where he is developing a new body of work that further investigates the technical and visual boundaries of natural dye work. @ocaduniversity #OCADU150 #OCADU #MAAD #FutureOfFashion #CanadaUnites #EmergingDesigners

@re.stance @textilemuseumofcanada : Future Fabrics – Decolonized Design, Biofabrication & Planetary Intelligence Panelists: Narishdath Maraj, Sabine Spare, Monica Polo, & Omar Tarek Zayed Moderator: Bianca Gittens Future Fabrics positions creators as architects of new material and cultural systems. The panel explores the intersection of ancestral knowledge and emerging technologies like biofabrication, asking how innovation can remain rooted rather than extractive. Framed by planetary limits, the conversation rethinks ideas of value, responsibility, and design itself—imagining what a future fashion system could look like if built on care, reciprocity, and long-term thinking. This programming is produced in collaboration with Re:Stance as part of the sustainable fashion symposium Temporality: A Love Letter to Gaia. Thank you for the honour and opportunity to discuss our work and research. #sustainablefashion #upcycling #innovation #mycelium ##textilewaste

EARTH BODY THREAD March 27th - May 5th Hala Alsalman @halalsalman Omar Tarek zayed @omar.t.zayed Spencer Ginn @spencerginn Art direction: Zeina Nahas @_______fragments This exhibition gathers the work of Hala Alsalman, Omar Tarek Zayed, and Spencer Ginn around forms that feel older than any single history: vessels, fragments of bodies, patterned cloth, repeated marks. These recurring images gesture toward the sublime, where the familiar slips into something vaster and harder to name. Here, clay, textile, and form do not simply cite Mesopotamian, North African, or Greco-Roman sources; they also blur timelines and mingle as ritual objects put together from an otherworldly archeological dig. Alsalman’s clay forms, Zayed’s hand-dyed textiles, and Ginn’s ceramic vessels each approach matter as a carrier of memory and belief, but also as an active, almost sentient presence in the room. Taken together, the works suggest that what we call “the past” is not fixed behind us; it moves through symbols, gestures, and materials that return again and again, pressing against the limits of what can be contained or understood. The gallery becomes less an archive than a quiet sanctuary, where viewers can encounter these works not as spectacle, but as a slow, inward recognition—a sense that these archetypal forms also inhabit their own inner worlds. #artgallerytoronto #contemporaryart #cafeandarttoronto #torontomustvisit #torontohighlights
