Our aerated static piles now have walls! 🤓

We’re trying out Microbins, a composting method honed by O2 Compost. Like our aerated static piles, the bins are never turned, and since the microbes that break down food scraps need a steady supply of oxygen, a bouncy house blower sends air through perforated PVC pipes to keep it aerated 🌬️

Each 4’ x 4’ x 4’ bin holds about 2.4 cubic yards, and at our current scale one weekly pickup fills one. Food scraps now go straight in instead of being held with bokashi until we have enough for an aerated static pile, which significantly cuts down on labor 💪

Our consultant, Peter Moon of O2 Compost, is helping us test the method, and we’re exploring building bins with schools and other communities 🪱

We have been exploring options to effectively scale up our operations as we continue to take on more household memberships and commercial clients, like local restaurants. In addition to interviewing proprietary composting-system companies for potential off-the-shelf options, we are running a pilot test of the Aerated Static Pile (ASP) composting method.

Aerated Static Pile (ASP) composting is an efficient, thermophilic composting method that uses blowers to force air through the compost pile. By supplying a flow of oxygen through perforated pipes, ASP accelerates the decomposition process, minimizes odors, and rapidly achieves the high temperatures required to destroy pathogens.

ASP composting is the method that most industrial-scale composting operations use, such as Cedar Grove who composts Seattle’s organic material. ASP is often done on massive compost facilities in huge windrows of compost. For this smaller scale pilot, our total input was 11 cubic yards of material, which included around 3.5 cubic yards (roughly 2.5 tons) of food scraps. Small in the grand scheme of things, but a significantly larger batch than our previous methods allow.

Stay tuned for updates! 🪱

✨ This July, we’re reflecting on what independence CAN mean…

💭What does independence mean to you?

For Max, independence is not individual. 🫂

Because when we live in alignment with who we truly are, the impact reaches far beyond us. The confidence, connection, and gifts we bring to the world become even stronger.

💬 What does independence mean to you? There are no right or wrong answers. Only curiosity!

“It’s a journey” … That simple phrase can change everything. 🌈

Pride isn’t about already having all the answers. It’s about showing up honestly, wherever you are in understanding yourself and your identity, and celebrating who you are right now. 💖

No matter where you are on your journey, we’re glad you’re here. 💙🤗💙

Changes are happening at 21 Accents 💙 Spoilers below.... 🫣

After building 21A for nearly two decades, Amy is stepping back from the day-to-day operations to make space for an exciting new creative chapter passing the baton to 21A’s brilliant new COO, Max Hart! 🌟

(But don’t worry… she’s not disappearing entirely 👀)

🪴We’re growing into something even richer: more offerings, more connection, and more opportunities to step into your authentic self.

We are excited to announce a new partnership with @mutinybayblues ! 🫐

They will be hosting a new food scrap drop-off kiosk and processing site in Freeland, as part of their growing network of community initiatives on the farm. Members will soon be able to drop off their food scraps then head next door and grab some delicious coffee and scones at Jupiter! ☕️

This partnership represents a big step for the Compost Collective toward establishing a decentralized network of drop points and processing sites. The more we grow our capacity, the more food scraps we can divert from the landfill, which can then become nutrient-rich soil amendment for use here on the island 🪱

Stay tuned for updates on our progress at Mutiny Bay Blues! 🙌

Getting fresh bins ready for Coast Salish Youth Coalition’s 8th annual Camas Bake! We are proud to be back for our second year providing food scrap collection and processing for this weekend’s event.

From @coast.salish.youth.coalition :

“This event is a multi-day campout where participants learn to harvest, process, cook and celebrate the traditional root foods of spring! These include camas, chocolate lily, spring gold and more. Camas harvesting and cooking is a millennia-old ceremony. This event is specifically for tribal members, families, and specially invited allies.”
