Make good music, meet interesting people, and spend your days surrounded by things you actually love. ☕️

The art of bar stools

A bar stool is a strange piece of furniture when you think about it. Built for a position nobody really commits to. Not standing, not properly sitting, just perched somewhere in between. It should be uncomfortable by design, and yet the kitchen island is where everyone ends up anyway, long after the food is finished and the conversation has moved on to nothing in particular.

That is what makes the good ones matter more than they seem to. Height that actually works with the counter. A backrest or a footrest placed where the body naturally wants it. Materials that feel good under the hand while someone leans on the seat next to you and talks. These are small decisions, but they decide whether people stay for ten minutes or two hours.

Which is a lot to ask of a seat with no arms and half a back. The right one manages it anyway.

The art of café exteriors ☕️

The outside of a café does a surprising amount of work. Long before anyone tastes the coffee they have already decided something about the place, based on nothing more than an awning, a font, a few chairs arranged on the pavement. It is the first impression of a space that most people never think of as designed at all.

The ones that get it right tend to share something. A sense of age, or at least of care. Paint that has weathered honestly. Windows large enough to see the life happening inside. Tables placed close enough to the street that sitting there feels like being part of the neighbourhood rather than watching it from behind glass. None of it is complicated, but it is the difference between a place people walk past and a place people stop.

A good café exterior is basically an invitation. The best ones make it very hard to say no.
