✨ ARC Review ✨

Both Sides Now by Madeleine Patch 🎧

TL;DR: a cosy, feel-good story about self discovery amidst life changing loss.

Madi was kind enough to send me a copy of her debut novel to read and I am delighted to share that I very much enjoyed it!

When her grandmother, Birdie, passes away, Joni finds herself adrift and bereft of purpose or direction. The discovery of decades-old letters and journals sends Joni all the way across the world in search of answers. With the help of an old record store, a charming Scottish lad, and a touch of magic, Joni uncovers the mysteries of Birdie’s past and finds herself inspired to learn from her grandmother’s experiences.

This is a wonderful debut that explores the link between music and memory, and how we can reflect on the past to inform our future, without losing ourselves to it. The magical realism aspect of the story is very touching—I’d love the chance to visit Off The Record myself, though I’m not sure I’d have the strength to leave!

If you’ve ever sanded down your edges to make yourself more palatable to others, you’ll relate to Joni’s struggle as she becomes her own person and forges her own path. Juggling an established career, complex family dynamics, and the heavy weight of expectation can feel smothering, but with a little support from the right people, Joni takes the first courageous steps towards an exciting new future.

Madi’s writing is beautiful and immersive, and Joni’s story is one of hope. Both Sides Now examines what it means to find “home” and how to move forward when moving “on” seems impossible.

Read if you love:
✨ magical realism
✨ healing and personal growth
✨ cosy, feel-good stories
✨ nostalgia

If you’re lucky enough to be experiencing autumn weather in your corner of your world, the November release of Both Sides Now is timed perfectly for you! 🍂

Both Sides Now 🎶🎧🧡

Thank you so much to Madi @one.orange.patch.reads for letting me read her story! I was following the writing journey for a while through her posts and was so glad to be able to read this! 🥹

The story follows Joni who feels lost after losing her Nan, until she finds some of her old belongings and letters from her past. She takes the leap and travels to Scotland to search for answers from a young record store owner where she finds that power of music to unlock the past.

I absolutely adored this story so much! It was so beautifully written and I connected to so many of the aspects of grief, finding yourself and the way that music was described. I don’t think I’ve highlighted that many quotes when reading on my kindle before!
Madi has created something so special, it was so comforting and felt like a warm hug.. I didn’t want it to end. Beau was such a beautiful MMC and I loved his little philosophical moments. One of my favourite quotes of his was “Sometimes things need time to sit and rest before they find their true potential.”

You can swipe through to see the themes, blurb and beautiful character art 🕊️🧡🎶

Okay just thought dumping right now but what an incredibly beautiful story!! And DEBUT NOVEL !! Shut the front door!

Did I laugh, kick my feet and also cry.. yes, yes I did haha. absolutely adored this book!!

From the prologue I was completely hooked! It instantly pulled at my heart and getting to know the charters Joni, Beau, Gee, Jack... Birdie!!... I FREAKING loved them, I have never found such a group of characters that I loved and could relate to so quickly.

This book was so wholesome and loving and you can tell how much time love and care Madi put into this book becuase it oozed off the pages!! Every interaction especially between Joni and Beau was warm, inviting, heartfelt and completely green flagged.

The care that was taken around grief and loss but also the healing in this, beautiful, messy and raw. And the music and magic realism in this book is literally just woven throughout the entire story, just thinking about it gives me all the feels again!

I have so much to yapp about this book!! I could read this over and over again!!

Swipe for the Blurb. Book available for pre-order now. Releases November 14th and definitely one you will want to read.

Thanks so much for trusting me with this ARC and your beautiful story! I am so glad I got to meet these characters!

Birdie is gone...but her past is calling.

When Joni loses her Nan, Birdie, her whole life is put on hold. Until the day she discovers Birdie’s old journal and a collection of letters containing secrets hidden for more than fifty years.

Determined to uncover the truth about Birdie’s past, Joni travels to Edinburgh in search of answers—and perhaps a way to finally let go.

Could it be that the grandson of the man Birdie loved has the answers she seeks…and will she ever find a way to move past Birdie’s death and embrace love without losing half of herself in the process?

September wrap up 💫🌸

What I read:
I felt more relaxed this month with only 1 arc read and managed to read 10 books. I’ve got some mini reviews coming up but Both Sides Now was so beautiful 🥹

What I watched:
Crew Girl was fun I’m team Cam for sure 🤩
The Love Hypothesis I really enjoyed. Ted Lasso season 4 is so good, I’m enjoying it better than the last season.

What I listened to:
Been listening to a lot of Noah Kahan.. I managed to get last minute tickets which makes me so happy 😭
But it’s the month my kids discovered they could talk to Google and ask it to play music 😆

"Birdie is gone… but her past is calling."

I feel beyond blessed to have been chosen as an eARC reader for Madi’s debut novel, Both Sides Now. She has put so much love and care into this and I just want to say thank you, first and foremost for trusting me with a first look.

Both Sides Now is one of those stories that will stick with you, long after the final page is read. Madi perfectly captured the insular feeling of grief; the hurdles of navigating life without someone you love and the journey it takes to make it out on the other side.

To put it lightly, I absolutely loved this book. I felt myself healing alongside Joni and I was lighter and more hopeful upon finishing the story. I was swooning and kicking my feet because Beau as our handsome, Scottish MMC was just divine. He is the greenest of flags and my new book boyfriend for sure!

If you love The Seven Year Slip and magical realism, then this book is for you!

PS.
Beau Balfour, you have my heart.❤️‍🔥🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thanks for the tags @the.library.of.sp and @kts.bookshelf. It was so fun seeing yours and so fun making my own! It was also a humbling experience putting my no make up, hair not done causal kitchen photo next to Hilary Duff 🤣🦤

I’m abit this abit of that gal. Some of my fav shows are now my fav because of my son. I was a baby when I had him so we’ve grown up together and I love it. Also I cried multiple times in Voicemails for Isabelle. What! Like how! So great!

Do we have anything in common my friends!?
