Since completing my PhD four years ago, tomorrow marks my temporary return to academic life. This event has a special significance. Although photography has long been a tool and subject of analysis in anthropology—as I have previously written about its role as an instrument and metaphor of the Empire and colonial rule—the integration of anthropology and its methods into the artistic world is relatively recent.

In recent years, anthropology has become a buzzword in the photography community. The growing interest in ethnography, collaborative strategies, research methodologies, and self-reflexivity, among other concepts, has extended anthropology’s influence beyond the scientific realm. Today, many photographers, regardless of their style or subject matter, have incorporated anthropological thought into their work, enriching their research, processes, production, and outcomes.

With this in mind, I have decided to use my photographic projects that involve collaboration with local communities as focal points to address these developments. Specifically, I will discuss “A Incompletude para Além do Fim,” developed in Porto, Portugal, and “Alima b'ê dê, Naviyu b'ê dê,” which is ongoing in São Tomé and Príncipe and Portugal.

My talk will take place tomorrow at 9 am at the Faculty of Geography and History at the University of Barcelona, at the Undoing and redoing anthropology with photography: dialogues, collaborations, hybridisations"panel. Despite the challenges, I would love to see you there!
