🎃🌊 PRODUCTIVE FUN: WHEN CLEANUPS BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER! ♻️

👀 Keep reading to the bottom for a FUN Halloween challenge we’d love YOU to be part of! 🦇

Throwing it back to Halloween 2022 in Bocas del Toro, Panama, when we dressed up in costumes made mostly from discarded materials and came together to give our environment a little love! 💚

At Wasteless World, we’ve always said something that might surprise you…

Cleanups are NOT the solution to plastic pollution!

Just a few weeks ago, we returned to clean mangroves we’d already cleaned over four years earlier, alongside local businesses and One Earth One Ocean. Sadly, the same area had become a dumping ground once again.

Without proper infrastructure, education and accountability, history will keep repeating itself.

So why do we keep organising cleanups? 🤔

Because they bring people together, reconnect us with nature and create opportunities to tackle the REAL causes of pollution.

We call it PRODUCTIVE FUN! 🙌

Environmental problems can feel overwhelming, and sometimes that causes people to turn away.

But we believe that when we make environmental action creative, social and FUN, we can inspire more people to become part of the solution! 🌍

🎃 NOW FOR YOUR HALLOWEEN CHALLENGE! 👻

Who’s up for organising a Halloween-themed environmental cleanup in their community?

Dress up, get your friends together, make costumes from reused materials and turn cleaning up your local environment into something unforgettable!

👇 COMMENT BELOW if you’re interested! We’d love to connect, share ideas and help inspire more communities to get involved!

Because protecting our planet doesn’t have to be depressing.

IT CAN BE PRODUCTIVE FUN! 💚

WASTE LESS. LOVE MORE.

Was wir dabei erleben:

Same lagoon. Four and a half years later. 🌿💚

Last Saturday, October 3rd, Greg, Carolina and I began our two-month investigation into waste management in Bocas del Toro, Panama, getting our hands dirty alongside an incredible community!

But this wasn’t just any cleanup for us.

Back in April 2022, Wasteless World joined forces with local authorities, businesses and volunteers to clean up this very same mangrove lagoon on Solarte Island, which had become an illegal dumping ground.

Thanks to the support of @aaudpanama , @miambientepma , @jahirtorresoficial , @ferrybocaspty and many others, we removed huge quantities of waste from this precious ecosystem.

Four and a half years later, unfortunately, the rubbish has returned.

This time, the cleanup was organised by the NGO @oneearthoneocean , bringing together an amazing community of volunteers and local organisations who removed approximately 150 bags of waste! 💪

While there was less rubbish than in 2022, it’s heartbreaking to see this beautiful place being polluted again.

Because cleaning up the problem isn’t the same as solving it.

That’s why we’re back! To listen, learn and explore how Wasteless World can help develop practical, community-led solutions to the challenges of waste management in Bocas.

💚 A HUGE thank you to everyone involved, including:

@bocas_pirates @ankayconservation @bocassurfacademy_ @thesfs_panama @bocas_mariculture @bocasstokedmonkeys @nura.ong @thebocasbreeze

And to everyone who supported the original cleanup in 2022. 🙏

Our goal isn’t to keep coming back to clean the same places. It’s to help create a future where we don’t have to.

Waste Less, Love More. 🌎💚

are five large ones in total. They aren't islands you could stand on. They release large amounts of micro plastic. The largest is four times the size of Germany. They are formed by colliding winds and currents. Many old, broking fishing nets also float in them, posing one of the greatest dangers of these garbage patches.

What do you think? Let's know in the comments.

Calling all restaurants, hotels and businesses across our beautiful archipelago

The improper disposal of waste in the mangroves remains a serious problem in Bocas del Toro. During our recent cleanup activities, we have found significant amounts of waste that appear to originate from businesses, including hotels, restaurants and construction-related activities.

We understand that many businesses rely on transport companies to take their waste from the islands to the main island and ultimately to the official landfill. At the same time, some of the waste we are finding in the mangroves suggests that not all of it may be reaching its intended destination.

We cannot know in every individual case where illegally dumped waste came from or why it was disposed of there. However, one possible reason is that transport companies may be avoiding the costs and logistics involved in taking waste to the landfill.

A simple tracking system

To help businesses ensure that their waste actually reaches the landfill, we would like to establish a simple waste-tracking system between local businesses, their transport companies and Cholo Cabaña.

The principle is straightforward:
When your waste bags are loaded onto the boat, simply send a message to Gaby at Cholo Cabaña stating:
- how many bags you are sending;
- which transport company is collecting them.

Cholo Cabaña will then confirm when the shipment arrives and how many bags were actually received.

This creates a simple record between the point where the waste leaves your business and the point where it arrives on the main island.

We are inviting restaurants, hotels, construction companies and other businesses throughout the archipelago to participate. The system is intended as a practical way for businesses and transport companies to work together and ensure that waste is handled responsibly.

If you would like to participate, please send me a message. I will coordinate with Gaby at Cholo Cabaña and explain how the system can work for your business.

Let’s work together to keep our waste out of the mangroves and where it belongs — in the landfill.

It was humbling to see firsthand what @oneearthoneocean is tackling in Manila and to understand just how important this work really is.

They’re not only working to remove plastic and waste from some of the world’s most polluted rivers and oceans. They’re also working to educate the next generation about why protecting these places matters in the first place.

One of the things that stayed with me most was seeing the communities living along the river. For many of the people this is simply what they’ve grown up with. It’s what they know. In some places, there isn’t even a realistic way to dispose of or recycle the waste around them. Some may have never experienced what a clean river looks like, or what it feels like to live alongside one.

And that isn’t their fault. They’re surviving within the circumstances they were given.

That’s why I believe telling these stories matters. Environmental problems like this don’t belong to one city, one country, or one river. They’re happening all over the world, in places both heavily impacted and places we think of as pristine.

It was a huge honor to help tell a small part of this story.

A special thank you to @marinong_hilaw31 and @maku_ansoni_d_araneta aboard the SeaKeeper. Your stories, passion, and dedication were genuinely inspiring to witness and work alongside.

And thank you to Daniel and Darren for helping bring this project together and being such an important part of it, as well as @adambuckofficial , @mateo_artadi and Viola for coming out and contributing to the story.

There are people all over the world doing the difficult, often unseen work of making things better.

These are their stories.

And I’m grateful I got to help tell one.

Thank you @oneearthoneocean for the work you’re doing around the world to clean our rivers, beaches, and oceans—and just as importantly, for educating people about why they’re worth protecting.

If you’re interested in supporting the work One Earth One Ocean is doing around the world, I encourage you to reach out to them and learn how you can get involved.
