I’m grateful to have joined my arts and culture sector peers from across the country in Ottawa this week for Arts Day on the Hill, organized by the @artscoalitionca. We advocated for a permanent $140 million increase in investment for the @canada.council. We were there to share why sustained investment in arts and culture matters for artists, arts workers, for the communities we serve, and for our ability to tell our own stories. Thank you to the MPs, senators, senior staff, and others who made time to meet with us, listen to our experiences and stories from our respective regions and disciplines, and discuss the opportunities and challenges facing our sector. It’s always a privilege and joy to (re)connect with peers to do this kind of work as we always find more ways to align and work together across disciplines and regions. I’m now returning to BC encouraged by these connections, and as our province heads into provincial and municipal elections, we must collectively continue our efforts at those levels of government.

💫 Proud to have been part of the Arts Day on the Hill delegation, joining colleagues from across the arts sector in calling on the Canadian government to make a permanent $140 million increase to the Canada Council for the Arts. It was also such a pleasure to co-host the Arts Day on the Hill Reception with Catherine Lindquist. Thanks to MP Ginette Lavack and MP David Myles for sponsoring the event. A huge thank you to the Canadian Arts Coalition and PAA for bringing everyone together and making the day happen. And to my fiery team, Rachel Billet and Barbora Racevičiūtė—thank you for being there with me, through the day and beyond. ❤️ Thank you as well to Senator Paula Simons, MP Martin Champoux, MP Louis Villeneuve, MP Fares Al Soud and Andrew Green, PMO Ontario regional advisor, for taking the time to listen, engage and support our ask. A full day of conversations, advocacy and connection. And we keep going. @conseilartscan Last 📸: Scott Doupt

Earlier this week, we opened our latest gallery exhibition here at Ross Creek: The Feast by Sara Hartland-Rowe. Sara was our first gallery artist after our opening 20 years ago, and also one of our first artists in residence. She sketched during rehearsals and production of our first outdoor production, The Odyssey, and quickly became a great friend to Ross Creek, as a faculty artist and as an advisor. The Feast is a series of oil-on-canvas paintings that depict some very prominent and infamous individuals in today's world. As Sara puts it: "I don't have any illusions that the pen — or brush — can topple palaces, but it has been cathartic to paint these chaos-mongers and join, in a small way, with the millions of others that see monstrous human behaviour and work to resist it." Also featured in the exhibition, Sketches from the Legislature, taken in Spring 2026 when protests in Nova Scotia surrounding budget cuts to the Arts and Culture sectors brought artists like Sara to observe our elected representatives from the Legislative Gallery. Sara documented her observations with her pencil, and they are now displayed here at Ross Creek. The Feast will be open until October 31, 2026. The Centre is open to visit Monday through Thursday between 10am and 4pm each week. You can also reach out and make an appointment to visit.

Adapting to our environment is one of the beauties of creating outdoor theatre, and of course, sometimes, it rains outside. To keep our By Fire series going during inclement weather/indoor performances, or when provincial burn restrictions prevent open fires, we had to adapt. Our technical director, John Thomson, created an artificial fire set piece that we use to keep that fiery glow burning for our evening performances! While an artificial fire won't give off any heat, it still immerses us in the timeless tradition of telling stories in the dark. Just 2 weeks left of our 2026 season! If you haven't made the trip up to see The Monkey's Paw yet, you have just two more weeks before the show closes. Many patrons and guests of Ross Creek often see Chris — Executive Director of Ross Creek Centre for the Arts — depicted in a very different light... literally. "Chris O'Neill is a stand-out as Bethany, the mother who makes an incredible demand on her husband in a riveting scene" - Audience Member Chris and the entire company can't wait to see you at the show between now and Saturday, August 15 when our season comes to a close!
