We’ve shared a LOT of information over the past four months about PrEP, a safe and effective method of HIV prevention. Although we always have information linked in our Resources highlight here on Instagram, here’s a quick list of key things to remember about PrEP!

Curious about how to start PrEP? Swipe ➡ for the details!

Once you’ve spoken to your healthcare provider about PrEP, your provider will test you for HIV. If you do not have HIV, you’ll then receive a prescription for PrEP. Every three months, you’ll need to have follow-up visits with your provider to test for HIV and to renew your prescription.

As always, you should consult your provider before starting or stopping any medication. Your provider will also be able to answer any questions you may have while you’re taking PrEP.

No current provider? No problem! Click the link in our bio to get connected to a provider near you!

Due to systemic factors such as racism and sexism, we know that Black women in the United States are more likely to get HIV than women of other races. In fact, data show that 1 in 48 Black women will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime.

PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a safe and effective method for preventing HIV, and has been shown to be 99% effective when taken as prescribed.

PrEP is available in New Orleans! If you have a regular provider, you can #StartTheConversation with them about PrEP today. If you’re looking for a provider near you, we can help! Check out our Resources highlight or head to the link in our bio for more information.

Wondering what it looks like to #StartTheConversation about PrEP with a provider? We’ve got you covered.

Sarah, a PrEP user, and Dr. Gaitor, a provider (and member of the Black Women and PrEP Task Force here in New Orleans!), demonstrate here a typical conversation between a patient and provider.

If you think PrEP may be right for you, you don’t have to wait for your provider to bring it up. Any provider who can write a prescription can provide PrEP. To find a provider near you, or to learn more about PrEP, head to the link in our bio or our Resources highlight.

In 2019, 82% of women living with HIV in Louisiana were Black.

A person may decide to take PrEP for any number of reasons, including because of where they live.

PrEP is a safe and effective option for Black women in New Orleans who are considering ways to protect their health.

If you’re considering PrEP, you can #StartTheConversation with your health care provider. For more information, check out our Resources highlights or click the link in our bio.

Many people who could benefit from taking PrEP are left out of the conversation. For example, in 2021, only 11% of Black or African-American people in the U.S. who could benefit from PrEP actually received a prescription for it.

You don’t have to wait for your provider to bring up PrEP. You can #StartTheConversation today!

Wondering if PrEP might be right for you? Check out the links in our Resources highlight and stay tuned for more information about PrEP!
