$October 21. Playing the sport I love. A race into the corner for the puck and I shattered my ankle, trimalleolar fracture. Surgery. Hardware. Full stop. No work. Self-employed. Right before Christmas. Finances froze, clients paused, staff stretched thin. Overnight I lost my independence. No driving my daughter to school, no letting my dog out, no doing the bare minimum without help. Asking for help. Accepting help. That part almost broke me more than the ankle. It’s been lonely, humbling, frustrating, and sobering all at once. Yesterday’s follow-up gave me a bit of light. I still haven’t met the surgeon who put me back together, but I guess that’s just how it goes. I can walk unassisted now. Physio is the focus. Rebuilding strength, piece by piece, so I can get back with my pack dogs, relieve the financial chokehold, and reclaim some version of myself. Cautiously hopeful for a mid-spring ski. Dreaming of getting back on my bike. If nothing else, this has stripped me down to gratitude, raw, hard-earned, and real.$
