11 years since my very first @deathcabforcutie concert and 5,000 km in total on the clock, just to hear „one guitar and a whole lot of complaining” live. Big thanks to Seth Cohen for introducing me to them!

Special shoutout to my partner in crime @fridaysister being by my side for all 3 shows... and even the one that got cancelled. 🫶

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE - "I Built You A Tower"
(2026 / Anti-)

With their signing to the independent label @antirecords and this debut LP for the label, @deathcabforcutie maintains the vitality they displayed on "Asphalt Meadows," delivering direct and effective songs.

Congleton continues at the helm with excellent results, @gibbstack and company are able to broaden their horizons with the kraut-pop of the single "Riptides" and the aggressive guitars of "Punching The Flowers" which begins with one of the most rock-oriented riffs they've ever created. The abrasive bass and the psychedelic, at times progressive, atmosphere of "How Heavenly a State" show that they've found a goldmine in unexpected places. They even venture into analog electronica in the style of David Bazan (the tender and inspired "Trap Door," with pianos reminiscent of The Cure).

This mature version of Death Cab for Cutie—acoustic, vocals, and a crescendo that begins with “Full of Stars”—has sufficient substance, even though Gibbard's youthful vocals and melodies reminiscent of their golden era of 2005 still dominate the songs. The less inspired moments—"Envy The Birds" sounds like their own version of Built To Spill until it becomes inconsequential—are compensated for by the band's signature melancholic choruses (“Pep Talk,” “Stone Over Water,” “The Flavor of Metal”). Finally, “I Built You A Tower” embraces cathartic darkness. This album confirms that the band has found a solid path to develop their autumnal sound, combining humility with a certain stylistic audacity.
