🌵 OPENING TOMORROW: I WENT ON A HOLIDAY TO THE COUNTRY YOU FLED FROM 🏜

Tomorrow from 5 pm onwards, the exhibition 'I Went on a Holiday to the Country You Fled From' by photographer Iris Haverkamp Begemann (@irishaverkampbegemann) & co-author Alejandra Ortiz (@tarquine_iquar), opens to the public.

This photo series examines the extent to which identities limit our freedoms, our ability to live an individual life and the development of our self-expression.

To address this, Dutch photographer Iris Haverkamp Begemann, a cisgender woman & co-author Alejandra Ortiz, Mexican writer and trans woman, joined forces. The duo used Iris' her freedom to go on a holiday to the country Alejandra fled from to record Alejandra's story. The series hopes to draw attention to the dangerous conditions that forced Alejandra to flee Mexico and her now enduring struggle for asylum and safety in the Netherlands.

We hope to see you all at the opening, tomorrow 15 July, from 5 until 9 pm onwards. There will be Mexican bites & drinks 🌮🍹 and tunes by Larry TWT (@larrytwt) & Passion Deez (@passiondeez). 🎧🎶 We hope to see you all there!

💧 WaterSchool 💧, a self-initiated design and research project of Studio Makkink & Bey (@studiomakkinkbey), currently on view at Melkweg Expo as part of the group show 'The Ways of Water', looks into the possibilities of founding a holistic school revolving around water as an essential material, subject, and socio-economic and political phenomenon — where education and curriculum are entirely rethought.

Studio Makkink & Bey was founded by designer Jurgen Bey (@jurgenbey) and designer - architect Rianne Makkink in 2002. The studio's many projects are diverse, and include public space projects, product design, architecture, exhibition design and applied arts. As part of the online Expo of 'The Ways of Water', you can view different videos of many of their projects related to water.

Haven't 👀 Marjolein Busstra’s (@marjoleinbusstra) multimedia solo exhibition 'We Don't Talk' at Melkweg Expo yet? This is the last week and chance to see the exhibition, so you better hurry up! 🏃🏽‍♀️

For this project, Busstra followed underage youths who have become entangled in the complex network of sexual violence and/or exploitation. The project also includes a documentary, 'Wij Praten Niet' (on view online at @2doc.nl / @npo.nl), besides the photographic series, on view at Melkweg Expo.

Melkweg Expo is open from Wednesday until Sunday, from 12 to 9 pm. We hope to see you all this week for the last days of 'We Don't Talk'!

Haven’t got the chance to 👀 the multimedia solo exhibition of Marjolein Busstra (@marjoleinbusstra) in @melkwegexpo, 'We Don't Talk', yet? You still have two weeks left: until Sunday 22 May.

What can you expect? The pairings of photographs in the exhibition have been assembled by Busstra associativity and intuitively. From this starting point, sets of two images were created: a white swan with its wings gracefully folded is placed next to a young woman in a long, white coat. An image of dishevelled clothing is placed next to an individual folded into themselves (see image). Next to the photography series, the exhibition presents two video works. We hope to see you at @melkwegexpo!

Do you no longer have the chance to come and see the exhibition in person? Check out the online Expo via the #linkinbio. 🔗 This online Expo is made possible by @onfotomat, the website builder for visual creators, and built by Peter van Langen (@studio_petervanlangen). The perks of online Expo’s: these can be viewed 24/7!

🪞 To make of me is to offer mutation to oblivion. To make of me is to body burst into heaven.

To make of me is to create an infidelitous descendant of the self with a part of self.

To make of me is to offer up your pound of flesh in sacrifice to the mirror. 🪞

And the mirror requests specifically the skin as offering.

And to mirror is to seek the mimesis of the capitalist young girl who gazes back as she bears tatters of your surface.

As she is your virus, using you as the means to reproduce—to cry, to fuck, to hold, to destroy, and to love. 🦠

And you hope to resolve the uncanny limitations of your access to this girl.

Because you somehow miss her. 🖤
