waterloo street, birmingham.

the building’s original connection to ocean assurance is still woven into its decoration. look closely at the corner details and you’ll find motifs associated with the company, including roses, thistles, waves and fish. these weren’t random embellishments, they helped give the insurance company’s headquarters its own identity. recognised for its architectural importance, the building was awarded grade ii* listed status in 1981, a designation reserved for particularly important buildings.

Autumn scene … Brum

A little moment of calm in the heart of Birmingham. 🌅🦢

As the sun sets over Aston Reservoir, the sky turns to shades of soft pink and peach, reflecting beautifully across the still water. With the autumn colours along the shoreline and two swans gliding peacefully through the reflections, it’s a reminder that even in a busy city, there are moments of quiet beauty waiting to be captured.

Sometimes, it’s not about travelling far to find something beautiful — it’s about slowing down, looking around, and appreciating the little moments right on your doorstep.

waterloo street, birmingham.

standing at the junction of waterloo street and temple row west, this striking grade ii* listed building was constructed around 1900–1902 for the ocean assurance corporation. designed by local architects mansell & mansell, it was built as commercial offices, reflecting birmingham’s growing importance as a centre of business and insurance. its elaborate exterior would have made quite an impression on anyone arriving in the city’s busy commercial quarter at the turn of the 20th century.

waterloo street, birmingham.

this is birmingham’s gothic revival architecture at its most playful. the building combines red brick with pale terracotta, creating a striking contrast across its five storeys. look up to spot the pointed corner turret, intricate arched windows and decorative gables. the style is known as perpendicular gothic, inspired by the vertical lines and elaborate tracery of medieval english architecture. it’s a remarkable amount of craftsmanship for a commercial office building.

Birmingham, where the city never stops moving, yet even the busiest corners can find a moment of peace. 🌅🧡

From the winding roads of Spaghetti Junction to the city skyline in the distance, all coming together beneath one golden sunset. A different perspective of the city I love to photograph.
