Something special happened at the @designleadershipnetwork’s Rome Summit: Our members, partners, and friends came together in a burst of collegiality that reminded us again and again of the reason why we do what we do: community. It’s a word that verges on hackneyed, yet community — the spirit and practice of connection — is what keeps each and every one of us away from the abyss and in the light. And let me tell you, there was a lot of a light in Rome.

One of the brightest lights was Janice Parker (@janiceparkerjpla), who received our Design Leadership Award during a Black Tie* (*encouraged!) dinner at the magnificent Palazzo Colonna. The DLA recognizes an individual who has contributed to the design industry through their stellar work, mentorship, innovation, research, or philanthropic endeavors. In Janice’s case, that list should conclude with an “and.” She’s done it all, and always with a fierce commitment to integrity that would be intimidating if she weren’t also one of the kindest, funniest, and freest spirits in the world of design.

In a video shown at the DLA dinner (and soon to be posted online), collaborators Jamie Drake, Ellie Cullman, and Linda London, client Henry R. Munoz III, and Lynn B. Kelly of the New York Restoration Project spoke eloquently to Janice’s out-of-this-world character and talent, and even the process of selecting Janice for the award reflected the sky-high esteem in which she is held by all who know her. After Michael Boodro sagely nominated Janice in a DLN staff discussion, the choice was clear. I emailed our Leadership Board for input and heard back from nearly everyone in less than an hour (!). The Board members’ replies glowed with delight. In my years of working with Boards I have never experienced such unanimity — or such impressive response times! (Continued in the comments.)
