Mallet finger occurs when the end of the finger is crushed, cut or forced to flex quickly like impact from a ball or climbing hold, like:

Catching the fingertip as you reach up quicky (how the fracture in the reel occured)

Or

Smashing into an aggressive dead point (how the tendon in this reel was injured).

Diagnosis is made when the fingertip can't straighten past 45 degrees , alongside imaging to figure out the extent of the injury:

If there is joint instability with a large fracture (50% of bone surface involved) then surgery is likely. Similarly if the tendon has been sliced then surgery is considered.

Splinting (usually 6-8 weeks, sometimes longer) is used in the majority of cases, ideally within a few weeks of the injury (but positive outcomes are common with splinting injuries that are months old).

Getting the end of the finger moving takes time and can be frustrating, but outcomes are generally pretty good in uncompleted cases.

As always keeping the fingers, rest of the hand and that arm are crucial as this issue needs longer rest that others (e.g. pulleys). If you have a mallet injury, or work with folk that do, be as creative as is safely possible to achieve this. 📈

For me this is always what keeps work as satisfying as it is. 💪🏻😍
