It’s hard to pinpoint when this pic was taken of Ben and Jeremy. Mostly because it was common for Ben to dress up in East German army uniform. Happened all the time.

Jeremy might be able to shed light on the occasion.

Guess it’s time to use hashtags. Gah.

Kurt Vonnegut once said, “Start as close to the end as possible.” So this picture from 1999 kicks off this horrible marketing exercise for the upcoming book, “Nineteen Ninety-Nothing”. It’s a book about Nobodies accomplishing Nothing in the Nineties. In Madison, Wisconsin, which is Nowhere. I’ll be using old photos to hawk this maudlin project, which will more likely than not, result in no book deal or publishing whatsoever. Anyway.

In Christmas of 1999, I and my roommates Ben Granby and Jeremy Smith decided to make a holiday card. The idea was to make it offensive, funny and work well with the banal stock artwork offered by the photo printing company. “Lots of love from our family” would be the inscription to the right.

Ben liked to dress in fascist military style, owing to his interest in extreme politics and belief in transgressive imagery. I was naked because I was 25 and dumb. Jeremy tastefully opted for a tuxedo jacket of mine. He really was our comedic foil. This was taken at our apartment on 143 Hancock St. in Madison by Grant Ferago.

It only goes downhill from here. Look for more photos and stories in the upcoming weeks. And if you’re a well established publishing house, I look forward to discussing 6-figure deals in the future.
