Medical associations across 🇨🇦 are deeply concerned about any government proposal that would restrict access to evidence-based medical care for patients, including for the transgender population.

We urge all levels of government to consult with physician experts in their field when considering any major changes in policy related to health care impacting the 2SLGTBQ+ community.

Dr. Deborah Marshall is a Hospitalist at Milton District Hospital has recently taken on the role of the Palliative Medicine Physician at MDH. From an early age, Dr. Marshall knew she wanted to become a physician because it was a field that allowed her make a difference in people’s lives, while also using her love of science.

She shares why she believes female representation is important in medicine.

“It is important that physicians represents the gender and racial diversity in our community, in order to provide the best possible care to our diverse population. Women are often underrepresented in medicine, especially in medical leadership. This year, there are eight female physicians included in Halton Healthcare’s Growing Leaders leadership development program, and I look forward to seeing us being part of changing this statistic.”

Thank you, Dr. Marshall! #WomenDocsCan #CWPD2024 💜🌟

Dr. Povieriena is a Hospitalist at Georgetown Hospital and has been a physician since 2020. She shares why she chose medicine as her career path.

“My parents had health issues and I watched their health decline when I was young. Back home we did not have much access to primary care or specialists, and their health issues could have been addressed earlier with appropriate screening, and management. Unfortunately, they passed away young. I think that’s why I was interested in medicine from early on. I wanted to help people stay healthy and live the best life they can with their families, I did not want any other kid in the world to lose the precious time with their mom or dad like I did.”

Dr. Povieriena is a firm believer that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to pursue their passion in medicine and would like to express gratitude to all women who have paved the path for the female physicians of today.

Thank you, Dr. Povieriena! #CWPD2024 #WomenDocsCan

“How can I protect myself and my kids from measles?”

🎙️Listen to an excerpt from CBC podcast The Dose with Dr. Brian Goldman from Feb. 29, 2024

Infectious diseases specialist Dr. Zain Chagla explains the dangers of measles and provides insight into how measles infection causes immunodeficiency
🔗 to full episode in bio

Be Aware! The measles virus itself weakens the immune system & causes long-term damage

‼️Another important reason to get vaccinated

One of the most unique—and most dangerous—features of measles is its ability to “reset” the immune systems of infected patients

Measles infection gives the body “immune amnesia” by destroying immune memory cells

What this means:

▪️Measles weakens the immune system and can make the body “forget” how to protect itself against infections

▪️It has the ability to destroy immune memory built over many years and from countless exposures to previous infections

▪️It can take months to years post-measles infection for protective immune memory to be restored. Those who are unvaccinated are at long term risk and vulnerable to other infections which they had previously overcome

‼️Protect your immune system with Measles Vaccination

Fortunately, vaccination not only prevents the spread of measles, but also reduces the impact of immune amnesia

💉💉The measles vaccine doesn’t have any negative effects on the immune system. Vaccination provides protective antibodies and prevents loss of immune memory✅

“When a medical student has invested into the Black community, which historically has maybe not been valued the same as other areas of medicine, I want them to know that they are seen and appreciated,” says #TemertyMed's Dr. Chika Oriuwa.

Dr. Oriuwa is passionate about supporting people. A @uoftmedicine psychiatry trainee and a mother of two young children, she continues to seek out new ways to support both the patients she cares for and the medical community to which she belongs.

Her latest demonstration of support is a philanthropic gift to establish the Dr. Chika Oriuwa Award for the Advancement of Black Health at #TemertyMed. Each year, in perpetuity, the award will recognize a graduating @uoftmdprogram student who has demonstrated their dedication to advancing health in the Black community.
