How do cultural differences shape healthcare?

Two senior @onu_nursing students set out to explore this question firsthand on a study abroad experience in Ferrara, Italy.

Friends Alexis Johnson and Hayley Solomon share a desire to become compassionate caregivers. They chose the nursing profession for the chance to provide direct patient care.

“I’m excited to be a motivator, teacher, and cheerleader for all the patients that I will get to serve,” said Alexis.

Both have jobs lined up: Alexis in the cardiac step-down unit at @promedicahealth Toledo Hospital, and Hayley in the cardiac ICU at @ketteringhealth.

Before graduation, however, they wanted to take one last adventure together. @studyabroadonu connected them with an opportunity to spend a week in Italy during ONU’s winter break, observing firsthand the care provided in a country with a mostly public healthcare system.

The two spent the week shadowing Italian nurses in a hospital’s emergency and operating rooms. They observed robotic surgeries for the removal of a cancerous adrenal gland and lung lobe, and witnessed a cardiac conversion, an emergency heart catheterization, and triage.

From sterilization protocol to the medical equipment utilized, the differences between the Italian and American healthcare systems proved enlightening, said Alexis. “Both systems have their pluses and minuses,” she said. “But I am thankful I get to practice in the U.S.”

During the week, the friends also embarked on sightseeing expeditions to Venice, Padova, Bologna, and Rome, where they saw the Pope deliver his Sunday message.

“My biggest takeaway from the trip was that I want to travel more and learn more about different cultures so that I can best help patients from different backgrounds,” said Hayley.

Caelyn Pfister has known since growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania, that she wanted to work in healthcare. That yearning grew at Fairview High School (@fairviewfamily) and during visits with her sister, Cassidy, then a student and now a graduate of Ohio Northern University.

“ONU felt like a home away from home. I made friends, and when I found out ONU has a great nursing program, that was it. I also was offered scholarships, so it was an amazing opportunity financially, as well.”

Nursing, she added, is the perfect fit because she’s a people person who excels at science.

Caelyn will graduate in May 2026 with a dual degree in nursing and in pharmaceutical healthcare business with a management concentration. She says one strength of her programs is the professors.

“I would not be where I am without them. The nursing program has the best, and they’re always willing to help in and out of the classroom. The business college is also welcoming; my professors always make sure I understand concepts that might be unfamiliar to me.”

Caelyn works as a paid emergency department nurse intern at MetroHealth in Cleveland, where she has “gained valuable real-world experience.”

She values being involved in campus clubs and organizations, including the National Students Nurses Association and Zeta Tau Alpha.

She plans to begin her career in an intensive care unit. Then, she’d like to work as a life-flight nurse or become a nurse practitioner, specializing in emergency medicine, intensive care, or wound care.

“I’m so glad I chose ONU. I will always be grateful for what I’ve learned and experienced here.”

Ohio Northern University students in nursing, biology, exercise physiology, pre-med, and other healthcare and science fields now have a new way of exploring and learning about the human body.

The new tool is called an Anatomage Table. Kami Fox, DNP, MS, RN, APRN, CPNP-PC, director of nursing and the School of Health, Life Sciences, and Education in the Getty College of Arts & Sciences, describes it as a giant iPad. It allows students to work with accurate digitized 3-D representations of life-size human bodies, based on actual human cadavers. The device can be placed on a table, or tilted upright.

Students can navigate through body layers by spreading out their fingers like they do on other touchscreen devices to enlarge certain areas, said Fox. They can also learn to identify organs and other structures as a label pops up when they scroll over certain areas of the body.

The first ONU Anatomage table arrived this past summer, purchased through a grant from

Ohio’s Super RAPIDS program. Fox and J.D. Yoder, Ph.D., dean of @onuengineering, collaborated in applying for that grant.

This fall, Brenda Reichelderfer, BSEE ’80, a donor and member of the University’s Board of Trustees, generously contributed funding for ONU to purchase a second Anatomage Table.

Built upon real frozen cadaveric slices, Anatomage Bodies are the most accurate and advanced digitized real cadavers, according to information from the company. “They provide ultra-high-definition, life-size representations of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology, with detailed anatomical variations in male and female anatomy, pregnancy, geriatric anatomy, and more.”
