Ajax entered the 1990s with an idea of what they wanted to be. By the middle of the decade, they had built perhaps its purest expression. Under Louis van Gaal, a generation raised in Amsterdam grew up together and conquered Europe together.

Van der Sar, the De Boers, Seedorf, Davids and Kluivert emerged alongside Litmanen, Overmars and Finidi, with Frank Rijkaard returning home to guide them. In 1994/95, Ajax went unbeaten through the entire Eredivisie season and beat the great AC Milan three times in Europe. The last came in Vienna, when 18-year-old Kluivert stretched out a boot with five minutes remaining to make Ajax champions of Europe.

They nearly did it again a year later, losing the Champions League final to Juventus on penalties. But football was already changing around them. The Bosman ruling arrived in December 1995 and, one by one, one of the great young sides of European football began to scatter across the continent.

Ajax had always produced players everybody else wanted. What changed was how difficult it became to keep them. Seedorf left, then Davids, Kluivert, Overmars, the De Boers and eventually Van der Sar. Van Gaal went to Barcelona too. A team that seemed young enough to rule Europe for years was largely gone before it ever had the chance.

It’s why we remember them the way we do. Because for a brief moment, everything simply came together: the academy, the manager, the old boys, the kids and an idea of how football should be played. It couldn’t last no matter how much everyone wanted to. The game wouldn’t let it.
