Our Artist Archive concludes with Oliver Kümmerli, whose practice operates at the intersection of photography and sculpture to explore the relationships between materiality, memory, and infrastructure.

During Zahn der Zeit at Art Under Dock, he presented works from his Gotthard series. Through image layering, cyanotype, and UV printing, he transformed historical imagery into sculptural objects, examining how landscapes and architectural structures shape collective memory and national identity.

Oliver Kümmerli — @ooli.k — Proto-Architectures – PA. 1 & 3

What happens when materials act as independent agents, following their own logic of growth, decay, and resistance?

Situated between modern technology and an archaic relationship to nature, these sculptures occupy a space where the manufactured and the organic converge. Integrated pump systems circulate a crystalline liquid across their surfaces at irregular intervals, continuously transforming their appearance and blurring the boundary between process and object.

On view as part of ozeane fliessen aufwärts, a collaborative exhibition organized by @6einhalb together with @hotel.tiger, @die_diele_die, @papillarya, @volumeszurich, @material_zh and @zwischentext.

OLIVER KÜMMERLI
Punt dal Gal, 2020

inkjet on matt paper, walnut wood
60 x 40cm

The project explores a dam in the Unterengadin region as a powerful human intervention in the landscape. The photographs are physically altered by burning, crumpling and tearing. The damaged surface reflects irreversible changes in nature.
