“A lot of Portlanders still may not know that Barn Radio exists,” said Jared Dancler, who visited the venue in the heart of Portland on a Saturday night in September. “To the electronic music scene, it feels very relevant online and in person, but if you walk by First Avenue, you don’t know it’s here unless somebody puts you on.”

Black-managed or Black-owned music venues in the United States remain rare. But along this row of nondescript storefronts, away from the fanfare of the main strip of nightlife in Old Town, an international underground electronic music scene has made its home.

Every weekend, music lovers are transported on a sonic journey across genres and borders — from the frenetic drum loops of Tanzania’s singeli to the soulful house of Chicago.

“For me there is real significance in the fact that a Black-led space in Portland can participate in that global conversation,” said Jasmine Beach, 38, who steers operations at @barnradio as one of its co-directors. “Black and queer communities in particular did not simply contribute to electronic music. They authored much of its musical and social language.”

I learned a new word last night - palimpsest. In a broader sense, it refers to a surface used for writing, with traces of the old showing through. In this context, it refers to the multiple layers of ghost signs of the businesses that once occupied this building on NW 19th & Vaughn in Portland, Oregon.

1909-1913: Carman Mfg. Co.
1913-1920: Montgomery Ward & Co.
1921-1926: Oregon Transfer Co.
1926-1930: Storage & Transfer Co.
1968-1982: Western Warehouse

“Light Capsules” project by @craigwinslow is a historical restoration effort reviving ghost signs and hand-painted advertisements using non-destructive light projection, also known as augmented restoration. He’s done over 40 of these, each usually only lasting for a night except for the one in Astoria, OR that became permanent. It’s a cool way to preserve and document the past using modern techniques.

My great-grandmother played piano to survive the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. My grandmother danced.

It’s one of the stories my mom would tell me, and it’s how music came into my family.

Happy Filipino American History Month! 🇵🇭🇺🇸 Very happy to share this sneak peek into my Filipino heritage and what helped me get started playing the piano, from my recent feature on Oregon Art Beat @opbartbeat @opb , the Emmy Award-winning series broadcast on PBS. 😁

I’m performing across the Northwest right now. My schedule is at the link in my bio.

This weekend I made a visit to the @laartmuseum_iceland to view their current exhibitions, including “Where the Land Begins” from the museum’s permanent collection.

It is a dream come true to have a photograph among so many incredible historic and modern works of art. Some of my favorite painters of all time are a part of this exhibition. All of the current shows are well worth a visit, I highly recommend stopping in.

Thank you to @alda.rose.artist for curating this exhibition and to everyone at the LÁ Museum. An incredible team here!

Last weekend, we joined thousands in Portland for a celebration of comics and fandom at Rose City Comic Con, where we premiered our new @opbartbeat special “Indie Comics City: How Portland Built Its Own Comics Universe.”

The film explores Oregon’s long history with the comics arts, and how it became a thriving hub for iconic independent publishers, artists and their creations.

After the screening, @rosecitycc guests stayed for a special panel moderated by OPB’s Donald Orr that featured the film’s producer Steven Tonthat, legendary Portland cartoonist Rupert Kinnard, and Katie Pryde, whose comics shop Books With Pictures won the coveted Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer award in 2022. Pryde's sister shop, Books With Pictures Eugene, won the same award in 2026.

On Saturday, young conference-goers also had a chance to meet Daniel Tiger in person and join us for storytelling and dancing. 🐯

Thanks to @rosecitycc and @fredrogersproductions for partnering with us on these experiences and to everyone who came by and said hello!

💬 You can watch “Indie Comics City” now at the link in our bio.

Wanted to share what my Sneaky Squatch looks like all framed up in its splatter painted frame I created.

You can find him at Twilight Cafe & Bar on SE Grand. My squatch is being very sneaky at this location. He is hiding up high in a nice place to sit with your friends. That is your clue!

Make sure you check out @sneakysquatchpdx and @geekweekpdx to follow along and see all the other amazing Sasquatch art pieces hiding all over the Portland area.

This 1/1 piece is FOR SALE, so if you find him and you want him to brighten up your home after the hunt, let me know! I hope you enjoy and he brings a smile to your face!

Get down to @twilightcafeandbar and check him out!
