Open space for nurses ✨
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I don’t think I realized how much of my identity was tied to being a forensic nurse until I stopped being one.
.
.
For four years, FNE/SANE nursing was the most meaningful work I had ever done. I wasn’t just going to work....I was advocating for patients during some of the worst moments of their lives. I was sitting with survivors.... Believing them.... Giving them choices.... Helping them regain a little bit of control when so much had been taken from them.
.
.
It was really hard.
.
.
It was also the first time in my nursing career that I felt completely consumed by a sense of purpose. And eventually, that purpose came with a price I could no longer afford to pay.
.
.
So I left bc I knew I needed to.
.
.
But nobody really talks about what happens afterward. What do you do when you leave the job that made you feel like this is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing?
.
.
What happens when the thing that gave your career so much meaning is also the thing you had to walk away from to protect yourself?
.
.
I found another job, one that allows me flexibility where I still help people and gives me a much healthier work/life balance. And I’m grateful for it, but sometimes I miss the person I was when my work felt like a calling.
.
.
I miss that fire, caring so deeply... I miss feeling like every shift mattered in a way that was bigger than me.
.
.
And I think that’s where I am right now: somewhere between knowing I shouldn't go back and not knowing what comes next.
.
.
Maybe I’m not actually looking for another job.... Maybe I’m trying to figure out who I am when my career isn’t the thing giving me my sense of purpose.... That’s a much harder question.
.
.
So, for now, I’m letting myself be in the limbo. I don’t have to have the next chapter figured out. I don’t have to find another version of the job I loved. And I don’t have to be unhappy with the life I have just because I’m still searching for what comes next.
.
.
Maybe the goal isn’t to find the exact same fire again. Perhaps it’s to find a new one.

You can't protect your kids from every bad thing in life, but you can prepare them to know what to do if something were to happen. When I have a child as a patient, I also want to talk with the parents to make sure they know this wasn't their fault either. There's a lot of self blame that they "didn't" protect their child, but really the only person to blame is the person who made the decision to do this to the child.
.
.
So, how can you do your best to keep your kids safe while also allowing them to experience fun as children? EARLY EDUCATION. Teaching your kids about consent, about their bodies, what to do if someone were to harm them, and most importantly.. you as the parent believing them if they do come to you.
.
.
Three common ways a perp will gain silence from the child is by telling them they will get into trouble if they tell, that their parents will get hurt if they tell, or guilting them and making them feel like they are hurting the perps feeling if they don't do what they say.
.
.
So, always make sure your kids know that you are a safe person to call or come to if they ever end up in a situation where they don't feel comfortable... Even if it's a situation they know they were not supposed to be in. Tell them you are the adult and it is not the child's responsibility to protect you as the parent, it's the other way around. And (especially for little girls), stop teaching them to be so polite when it comes to their discomfort.

2024 has been an incredible year, and I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many of you through my group trips and the support you've shown for the projects I share. One of the highlights has been receiving messages from you all—hearing that you’ve started or completed your SANE course or implemented similar initiatives in your own hospitals. It’s moments like these that truly make it all worth it.
.
.
I know this page may not resonate with everyone, but I’m so appreciative of those of you who continue to engage, learn, and grow with me. To those who now lead with compassion and empathy, who understand that things aren’t always as simple as they seem—thank you. It’s easy for others to say, "Just leave," "Pick yourself up by your bootstraps," or "Don’t put yourself in those situations," but we know the reality is far more complex.
.
.
Although it may not always feel like it, 2024 has been a year of significant progress, and I can’t wait to see what 2025 holds. Here's to continuing this journey together and creating even more positive change.
.
.
May you all have a very Happy New Year.

Donate to organizations, seek out local protests, stand up and say something when you see someone being violated, educate your kids on how to not dehumanize anyone who may be different from them, sign petitions, stay in the know-- issues don't resolve bc you get to stay in your little bubble.

Lots of new followers from my Galápagos scuba diving reels... Diving is my outlet for the intense job I work in my everyday life as a Forensic Nurse Examiner. Hopefully you will stick around to learn more about how you can be the change we need to see in this world.

DV, SA, and HT are very important topics to me. It's sad that a job like mine has to exist, but I'm grateful that I get to be the light of hope in someone's darkest day. ❤️
