devised project: the dancing plague of 1518
created by the ensemble and Rachel Blair

the dancing plague of 1518 as an act of rebellion and due to the lack of disconnection, not only to the people, but to the land as well. The poor/working class were sleeping in shit, starving, homeless, getting every disease, losing loved ones, while the wealthy lived in opulent ease. This is a story about corruption, willful neglect, and community. It’s about a people whose pain was used to fuel and feed the powerful. It’s a story of a group of people who were never seen or acknowledged by society, who were pushed aside, seen as trash. And how their mind and body could not handle it any longer, and literally broke. They were not able to continue their life without having someone see and validate them and their pain. I saw this an inevitable result of the anomie, capitalism, neglect, illness, corruption, and the lack of community, compassion, and connection. Since violence on/to the land leads to violence/illness on the body. I believe none of this would have happened if the land was never privatized and controlled. The only thing constant in life is the earth, and we should care more about keeping the earth and each other safe than worshipping God or commerce. I am eternally grateful for this opportunity to create and share this piece with the ensemble and the ability to figure out what kind of artist I want to be. I want to use my art to provoke meaningful discussions about society, and to have people feel a sense of community and acknowledgement. I want people to feel seen and see life through a more nuanced lens. I don’t even know how to say goodbye to you. I have always believed theatre is about community. I have known that since I was a child, and the only place I could be myself was inside the walls of the theatre. For a while, theatre made me feel like an outsider, which is the exact opposite reason why I fell for it in 2011. This process helped me find Cordy again, and I cannot thank the ensemble, Rachel, and Loralie enough for that. Maybe the real dancing plague was the friends we made along the way.
