As my friends know, I am a fanatic for old movie theatres, so the past couple days were a special treat as I got to return to one of my favourite movie theatres around: the glorious Patricia Theatre in qathet (formerly known as Powell River).

Thank you to my old mentor/instructor from Emily Carr, Peg Campbell and her partner, Gary Shilling for bringing THE PAINTED LIFE OF E.J. HUGHES to the @qathetfilm festival! It was an honour to present the film to another coastal BC community where audiences know and love EJ Hughes’ work. And speaking of artists, big thanks as well to @MeghanHildebrand for moderating our Q&A — and also for inviting myself and director Jenn Strom for a studio visit. If you’re not familiar with Meghan’s work, do yourself a favour and check out her Instagram to see her extraordinary paintings. 👩🏼‍🎨 🎨 🖼️

And if you haven’t seen THE PAINTED LIFE OF EJ HUGHES but want to, we have some exciting news: the film is expanding to more theatres around the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island! Stay tuned for theatres and dates.📽️🎞️🍿

📽️ We had another great screening of THE PAINTED LIFE OF E.J. HUGHES at the @VIFFest Theatre on Tuesday. It was supposed to be our final screening but since it was SOLD OUT(!) we’ve been held over for 6 more screenings: Feb 23, Mar 3, 4, 9, 11 and 13. If you couldn’t make it to any of the screenings until now, you have 6 more chances to see it!

🎟️ For tickets go to viff.org or check out the link in my bio.

Tuesday was also very special because, as someone in the audience pointed out, it was Hughes’s birthday! Happy birthday, Mr. Hughes. We plan to toast you with a milkshake at your favourite place, the Doghouse Restaurant in Duncan, very soon. 🎈

📽️ Thanks everyone who came out to see THE PAINTED LIFE OF E.J. HUGHES at the @victoriafilmfest! It was great to screen the film before a ‘Hughes hometown’ crowd at the Vic Theatre. Thanks to all the cast, crew and friends who came out, but especially Hughes’s niece June Simpson and grandniece Sarah Durno, as well as Hughes biographer, Robert Amos. And also massive gratitude to Michael Warren of the @madronagallery for both moderating our Q&A and for hosting our reception after. It was a special treat to have a whole room full of Hughes paintings on display at our after party!

If you weren’t able to get tickets before the show sold out, fear not as we plan to return to Vic Theatre for some holdover screenings after the Festival. 🍿

She was first drawn to him through place.

About seven years ago, Coquitlam filmmaker Jenn Strom was studying British Columbia, wanting to dig into the province’s history to understand how it evolved and how the change shaped residents.

“I thought it was a real cool way to explore B.C.,” the Centennial Secondary graduate said.

Her discovery project led her to books by Robert Amos, the biographer of E.J. Hughes — a recluse on Vancouver Island who mostly painted nature landscapes.
