Traunsteinera globosa The Globe Orchid or Round Headed Orchid It is one of the most unusual European orchids. The only species of this genus in Europe. At first glance, the inflorescence looks more like a small purple-pink “stick” than a typical orchid. Its spherical inflorescence consists of dozens of tiny flowers packed so closely together that they resemble a pincushion or a miniature cauliflower. Hlavinka horská Je to jedna z nejneobvyklejších evropských orchidejí. #nikonz8 #laowa90mmf28ultramacro #traunsteineraglobosa #globeorchid #roundheadedorchid

Unlike many of our wild orchids, marsh helleborine (Epipactis palustris) can spread over sizeable areas with creeping rhizomes when its habitat is just right. Take a look at this whopping population of over ten thousand in a single dune slack in Lincolnshire I found 🥹🌱❤️

Pseudorchis albida The Small White Orchid 🇬🇧 A very rare orchid with a delicate vanilla-like fragrance, found in the Czech Republic at only a handful of sites in the Jeseníky Mountains, the Orlic Mountains, the Krkonoše Mountains, the Ore Mountains, and the Šumava Mountains. It thrives in nutrient-poor, traditionally managed mountain and submontane meadows. The species depends on specific soil fungi and suitable pollinators, which is why it is considered an indicator of well-preserved, high-value natural landscapes.

Geniale e affascinante, vero? #loveforthenature #loveforlittlethings #botanicalillustration #orchids #watercolorjournal

Epipactis microphylla The Small-leaved Helleborine 🇬🇧 A rather plain-looking helleborine, yet a very rare one. This inconspicuous woodland orchid is among the smallest species of helleborines in Europe. In the Czech Republic, it occurs at only a handful of suitable sites and always in small populations. Its tiny leaves reflect an interesting adaptation: even as a mature plant, it does not rely entirely on photosynthesis to obtain all the organic compounds it needs. Instead, it can supplement its nutrition through symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi, including species of truffles (Tuber spp.). #fujifilmxt50 #ttartisan100mmf28bubblebokeh #epipactismicrophylla #smallleavedhelleborine #epipactis

Neotinea ustulata The Burnt Orchid It got its name from the appearance of the flower bud. The unopened inflorescences have a dark brown to almost black tip, as if scorched by fire. This is where the English name “burnt” and the Latin species name ustulata, which means “slightly scorched”, come from. It is severely endangered in the Czech Republic. The greatest threat to it is not collection, but the overgrowth of meadows with shrubs, intensive agriculture and the disappearance of traditional farming, which maintained suitable conditions.

Gymnadenia densiflora The Marsh Fragrant Orchid It is a rare European orchid that, at first glance, resembles the more familiar orchids. Its dense flower spike consists of dozens of small pink to purple flowers and produces a strong, sweet fragrance during flowering, especially in the evening, when it attracts mainly long-tongued moths. The flowers have a long nectar spur that can only be reached by suitable pollinators. For a long time, the Gymnadenia densiflora was regarded as merely a variant of the closely related Gymnadenia conopsea. Only more detailed botanical research demonstrated that it is a distinct species, differing in its denser flower spike, more robust growth, and ecological requirements. It is also much rarer. It grows mainly in wet meadows, calcareous fens, and spring-fed wetlands. When these habitats are drained or become overgrown with shrubs, the species quickly disappears. In many parts of Europe, including the Czech Republic, it is considered a threatened species. The greatest threat to its survival is the loss of suitable wetland habitats. Pětiprstka hustokvětá Je to vzácná evropská orchidej, která na první pohled připomíná známější vstavače. Její hustý klas tvoří desítky drobných růžových až purpurových květů a během kvetení výrazně voní, zejména večer, kdy přitahuje především můry s dlouhým sosákem. #nikonz8 #sigma135mmart #gymnadeniadensiflora #marshfragrantorchid #gymnadenia

I love Orchid season!!! @hantsiwwildlife Noar Hill is absolutely alive right now!! Laid in the grass in had 6 Orchids in one small view point. Musk Orchids were todays target and we enjoyed them in profusion! @danmoles I cant thank you enough for some guidance when our usual slope was barren! Amazing to meet a family out looking for Musk orchids too. We had a great chat about all 4 of our kids and how rare it is to see kids so into nature. I said that if they saw my IG community like @benjaminfallow. @naturetasticwh and @mustelid_man they might change their minds. Kids deserve nature and the announcement about the Natural History GCSE that @marycolwell1 and @carolinelucasbrighton have worked so so hard to bring to fruition is such a game changer. Hopefully our nature deficit disorder will be phased out from now on!! #muskorchids #natureforall #natureinspires #Orchids #noticenature
