Cypripedium calceolus

The Lady’s-Slipper Orchid

It got its name from the striking yellow lip of the flower, which resembles a small shoe or slipper. Its flower works as a trap. Insects crawl inside, attracted by the scent and color. They cannot get out the same way and must pass through a narrow opening around the anthers and stigma, which ensures pollination. A single plant can live for several decades. Some clumps of slipper orchids in protected locations are probably older than many of the people who come to admire them. Due to its unusual appearance, the Lady’s-slipper orchid is considered one of the most beautiful European orchids and is often referred to as the “king of Czech orchids”.

Orobanche caryophyllacea

The Clove-scented Broomrape 🇬🇧

This plant differs from most other plant species in its way of life. Because it contains only a minimum of chlorophyll, it cannot produce nutrients through photosynthesis and is dependent on parasitizing on the roots of other plants, most often various species of nightshade. It spends most of its life hidden underground and only emerges above the surface during flowering. Its flowers are known for their delicate clove scent, which is why it got its name. The clove disease is one of the rarer species of Czech flora and is sensitive to environmental changes and the loss of host plants. Its unusual way of life shows how diverse strategies plants have developed during evolution.

Orchids have always fascinated people around the world with their incredible beauty. With thousands of species found in nature, each one reveals its own unique colors, shapes, and character. From vibrant purples and bright yellows to soft pinks, pure whites, and even rare blues, every orchid bloom feels like a small masterpiece painted by nature.

Among these stunning plants, one group truly stands out — the majestic Vanda orchids, often considered the queens of orchids from Thailand.

What makes Vandas so special isn’t just their large, vibrant flowers, but also their signature look: exposed roots. Unlike most plants, Vandas grow freely without traditional potting media, allowing their roots to hang in the air. And honestly, that’s where their real charm is.

Those strong, silvery roots absorb moisture from the air, creating a plant that looks almost suspended in space. It’s a perfect blend of elegance, strength, and natural design.

When Vandas bloom, they become breathtaking living art, producing spectacular flower clusters that can last for weeks and instantly bring color and sophistication to any space.

For orchid collectors and plant lovers, Vandas are more than just flowers — they are a true symbol of beauty and passion for nature.

Even as a hybrid, it holds rarity and prestige because of its precise genetics and origin. Today, it’s admired by collectors and professional growers worldwide — proof that expert breeding can elevate nature’s beauty to another level.
