They sailed around the world, made history, and came back with stories of courage, grit and determination. 🌊🇮🇳

At Sagarmanthan 2026, we interacted with the pioneering all-women team from the Indian Armed Forces that circumnavigated the globe — a landmark expedition showcasing the strength and spirit of women in uniform.

We spoke with Lt Col Anuja Varudkar (Indian Army, Expedition Leader), Sqn Ldr Shraddha P. Raju (Indian Air Force, Deputy Expedition Leader), and Lt Cdr Priyanka Gusain (Indian Navy) about their extraordinary journey, the challenges they faced while navigating the globe, and what it takes to keep going through such an arduous expedition.

We also asked them a more personal question: What was the one thing they missed the most while away on the journey?

From navigating vast oceans to overcoming challenges far from home, their stories offer a glimpse into the determination behind an expedition of this scale.

A conversation with women who have made history and continue to inspire the next generation. ⚓

ONE OCEAN. MANY VOICES. A SHARED FUTURE

From heads of government and policymakers to global thinkers and women who have made history at sea, Sagarmanthan 2026 brought together voices united by one shared resource — our oceans.

Former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed, former Prime Minister of Tunisia Mehdi Jomaa, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, ORF President Samir Saran, and distinguished international voices shared their perspectives on cooperation, leadership and the future of our oceans.

The women officers of Samudra Pradakshina brought another powerful perspective — courage, service and India’s maritime journey.

Different nations. Different experiences. One global conversation.

Global conversations are no longer just for the old guard. The youth are here, too. 🌊🇮🇳

At Sagarmanthan 2026, the massive participation of young delegates was hard to miss. From geopolitics and trade to the future of the global economy, young people are increasingly stepping into spaces where ideas are debated and the world’s next big questions are discussed.

So, we took one question to the delegates: “What does Sagarmanthan 2026 mean to you?”

The answers? Hope. Stability. A churning of ideas.

Different words, different perspectives, but one shared belief in the importance of dialogue and fresh thinking.

And as some young delegates put it, Sagarmanthan is also about understanding why the ocean bears India’s name. 🌊

We asked. The youth answered. Here’s Sagarmanthan through their eyes!

The future of our oceans depends on the action we take today. 🌊

At Sagarmanthan 2026, we had a quick conversation with Patricia Furtado de Mendonça, Global Lead of the Ocean Centres Initiative, an international programme developed by the UN Global Compact in partnership with the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

We spoke about her organisation’s work, the “Drop the S” campaign, and efforts to drive greater awareness and action around ocean sustainability.

Towards the end, Patricia shared a message for young people looking to make a difference:

“Believe in yourself, you have the power to bring change!” ✨

From crossing oceans to inspiring a new generation of maritime leaders.

At Sagarmanthan 2026, we had the privilege of meeting the remarkable women officers of Samudra Pradakshina — India’s first-ever tri-service, all-women circumnavigation sailing expedition.

Their journey was far more than a voyage across the world’s oceans. It was a story of courage, endurance, teamwork and the determination to push beyond the limits of what is possible.

Covering nearly 25,500 nautical miles across four oceans, the expedition brought together women officers from the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force on one historic mission.

Their achievement stands as a powerful reminder that the ocean does not just test you — it transforms you.

At Sagarmanthan, their experience added a deeply human dimension to conversations around India’s maritime future, leadership and the growing role of women in the maritime domain.

A salute to the women who sailed beyond the horizon — and came back having expanded it for many more.

The India We Remember Is Not the India Powering the Future

As my book reaches American readers, the story of how India brought electricity to more than 230 million people still without it in 2016 and rose to third in the world for installed renewable capacity by 2026, and why the world have a stake in what comes next.

Most of us who grew up in South Asia have a power-cut story. The candles kept ready in a kitchen drawer, perhaps, or the torch that lived by the bed, and later the inverter that beeped through dinner. Mine is simpler, because our home in a village in Uttar Pradesh had no electricity to cut. My father went to great lengths to make sure there was kerosene in my lamp so that I could study after dark. Long before I could explain it in the language of policy, that lamp taught me that energy decides who gets an evening, and who gets a future.

“India will be the superpower in the maritime sector”

India’s maritime ambitions go beyond shipbuilding. They are about building confidence, empowering youth and women, and shaping a stronger maritime ecosystem for the future.

At Sagarmanthan 2026
The Great Oceans Dialogue, Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal outolines the vision for India’s maritime journey towards 2047.

The ambition is clear. The ecosystem is evolving. And the next decade will be crucial in turning that vision into reality.

Watch the Minister’s perspective on India’s maritime future.
