Thoughts on Memory of a Free Festival at @ormstonhouse for @artreview_magazine . Follow the link in the bio.

I was drawn to this show because of my own memories of nuclear paranoia — probably sparked by all kinds of nuclear panic on TV and film in the early 80s…
like the silly 1983 movie War Games, with Matthew Broderick as a high-school hacker-nerd who accidentally triggers World War III from his bedroom computer; or The Medusa Touch with Richard Burton as a telekinetic novelist who (as the film ends) reveals a plan to blow up Windscale / Sellafield. Worst — or best — of all was Threads (1984) Mick Jackson and Barry Hines’s lastingly terrifying drama about societal breakdown before and after a nuclear attack in Britain. I show clips of this every year to students; no idea if it freaks them out, but it still scares the hell out of me…

Ground works was made last year in relation to Gabhlán Gaoithe-Dara Sraith. It came out of a period of researching and making through a type of training known as Neuro Feedback Therapy. There is various applications of this therapy, and it is usually accessed through multiple sessions with a trained neuroscientist. It has been available and in development since the late 50's, early 60's.

More recently we have been able to access "off the shelf versions" like this one in the animation which can assist in supporting our meditation and sleep practices. Gabhlán Gaoithe-Dara Sraith is currently on view as part of Energy Made Visible @ormstonhouse

Energy Made Visible is a group exhibition centred around the paintings of Michael Ashur (1950–2024). Known for his meticulous airbrushed compositions, Ashur’s body of work is predominantly concerned with solar systems, celestial bodies, and overlaps between artistic and scientific disciplines. This exhibition places Ashur’s work in dialogue with four contemporary Irish artists. Contributions from Ann Maria Healy, Sean Lynch, Thaís Muniz, and Garrett Phelan serve to activate and expand upon Ashur’s enigmatic paintings.

Energy Made Visible is in its final week with a special closing event coming up this Saturday check out the Ormston House website for details.
