Esto es solo el comienzo…

(2/2) "...Like every generation that specialises more than the one before it, I now think it is impractical to attend graduation ceremonies. I am a dangerously average student; so is my brother. I know that we would never give a valedictorian speech, nor would we ever receive any awards.

So please help me understand why my mother would not have us miss these boring ceremonies. She takes 10-hour road trips to my and my brother’s graduations. She drags grandparents along to long ceremonies where their highlight is watching us drudge along in cramped processions. I have come to love that my once-upon-a-time practical, no-nonsense mother is now really sentimental about these days in my life. Her not missing my graduation ceremonies gives me the sense of validation that my monumentally average academic prowess would never."

Osaretin Osalador (@osaz_), this was such a heartfelt story from Nigeria! Thanks for shedding light on the ever-changing ways of our loved ones.

(1/2) "If you had asked me as a child, I would have described my mom as practical, unfeeling, and unsentimental. She was no-nonsense like every other Yoruba woman I knew. She spoke in high-level morse code; I learnt how to regulate my behaviour in social situations from reading her blinks, body language, and tonal inflections more than the words she said.

She really is one of the most beautiful women I know, so her presence was intimidating, and her decisions were final and based on prioritising the most important things. Practical.

I was sent to boarding school at 10 years old in a different state, hours from home. This was and is not entirely abnormal in southwestern Nigeria. Children are sent to be independent, to come home once only for the end-of-term holidays every few months. I was told early in the term that it was impractical for my family to visit me during the once-a-month visiting days, nor did it make sense to come home for the 3-day mid-term breaks, so I would make do with the provisions I was given at the beginning of the term, in the company of prepubescent boys and girls and weird teachers..."

Stay tuned for part 2!

✨It’s the self care for me✨

So moving to Mauritius has definitely been challenging but I have to take the time to shout out an individual who made the move a whole lot easier. @osaz_ DID THE ABSOLUTE MOST

•She organized a car for us to hire
•She made sure there were 2 cars to come pick us up after quarantine
•She organized a place to sleep the day we got out of quarantine because we came out super late to move into our own place
•She moved around with us to be our GPS before we got our internet
•She’s been a hella source of knowledge (because grocery shopping is a WOW, most things are in French 🤣)

Anyway I can go on and on GIIIRRLLL YOU ARE AMAZING AND THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU 😘😘😘

PS we went to the spa where they DUG INTO US WOW WOW send help guys 🏳️🏳️🏳️ I have knots for days and I am not okay 🤣🤣🤣🤣
