Did you know that most supermarket whisky brands add water and colouring to their whisky?

Yep it’s true, they usually add caramel colouring to give whisky that dark hue. Not only does it make it visually more appealing, but they also use it to maintain consistency in their product, meaning it should always look the same.

40% isn’t usually the ‘natural’ whisky strength from the barrel. Brands will usually add water to bring down the abv and 40% is the LOWEST abv it can be to still legally be called whisky. Lower than that and they’ll have to call it something like ‘a spirit drink’.

If you want whisky that is the same as it is from the cask, look for ‘Cask Strength’. The abv will usually be higher, but you can add water to bring down the abv to a level that you enjoy. Some brands will also advertise ‘no colouring added’ meaning they’ve not added any colouring to darken the hue.
