Village fete joy! Anthony, Lettice and I were in charge of the plant stall at the Coln St Aldwyns village fete held in the grounds of the @colncommunitystores here in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds yesterday. He spread happiness and I (wo)manned the card reader. The Cosmos sold out in seconds, and the Verbenas flew out too. As did Anthony when the garden show results were announced: he returned with not one but THREE first rosettes, a silver cup AND the golden potato. Of course I was going to make him wear all the ribbons for the photograph as such brilliance in horticultural endeavours should be recorded for posterity. I’m afraid @lovelylettice failed to place in the Prettiest Bitch class in the dog show – obviously, she was robbed but this wasn’t the biggest disaster of the day. That would go to the chocolate fudge cake I was tasked with making the Guess the Weight of the Cake competition. Seconds after smugly sending a photo to lovely Yvette, I dropped the bloody thing on the kitchen counter as I was transferring it to the cake stand (purloined from stock @foundbysashawilkins). So I cut it in half and we had guess the weight of the skewiff half cake instead. Congratulations to Rosanna who guessed within 100 g (the entire cake weighed 2.6 kg before it slid to its doom). I was very sad to discover afterwards that she was coeliac but her family very kindly cut the cake into portions and handed it out to all the fete attendees. It’s astonishing just how many slices you can get from 1.3 kg of slightly squished chocolate cake.
