⚽ Match 48: Cape Verde 🇨🇻 vs Argentina 🇦🇷

Cape Verde may have been the World Cup’s second-smallest nation, but they made one of the biggest impressions of the tournament. Forget Messi and Ronaldo – it was the Blue Sharks who captured the imagination with a remarkable debut campaign.

Football first arrived on the islands with the Portuguese in the early 20th century, and after gaining independence in 1975, Cape Verde has steadily carved out its own footballing identity. With the Blue Sharks making waves, Mundial Bites simply had to celebrate with a taste of the sea. 🇨🇻⚽

Although Cachupa is the national dish, Bacalhau com Natas is a much-loved favourite for celebrations and special occasions. After Cape Verde’s incredible efforts against Argentina, this certainly felt like a day worth celebrating.

The creamy baked salt cod was rich, comforting and absolutely delicious, paired perfectly with a chilled glass of Mateus Rosé Frizzante. Once dismissed as a relic of 1970s suburban dinner parties, this lightly sparkling Portuguese rosé has earned a deserved revival. Its gentle sweetness and crisp acidity were a perfect match for the dish.

One of the joys of Mundial Bites is celebrating the stories behind the food as much as the food itself, and Cape Verde’s remarkable World Cup adventure deserves to be remembered.

One match. One nation. One bite (and sip!) at a time. 🌍🍽️

Were you cheering on the Blue Sharks this summer, and have you ever tried Cape Verdean cuisine?

A big shoutout to our local Portuguese @otinorestaurant in Plender Street - run by Maria Cabral and her family.

We’d recommend dropping in to try some deliciously hearty food!
Maria is a regular at the studio, attending Chris and Natalia’s classes - and has been coming since the beginning…
A very friendly lady, with a beautiful smile and positive outlook. Always ready for a Pilates stretch and workout!

O Tino: Better than Portugal?

Here’s how to do O Tino’s, by Tome Morrissy-Swan.

Tucked between Belushi’s and a nail salon in Camden, O Tino’s is the kind of place London does best - family-run, garlic-heavy, and full of regulars who all seem to know each other. Come for the salt cod, clams, and piri piri chicken cooked over charcoal; stay for the warmth (and maybe a glass of port on the house).
