On september 14, 1982, 44 years ago "Girls Will Be Girls" the second album by R&B girl group Klymaxx was eleased By Solar Records. Produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis along with Lakeside members Otis Stokes and Stephen Shockley and Dynasty member William Shelby. This would be one of the first acts Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis would begin their writing and production career outside of The Time. The track "Wild Girls" was the only of the album written and produced by the duo. "The Man in My Life", "Heartbreaker (I'm Such a Mess)" and "All Turned Out" were also produced by them but not written by the duo.

Lakeside’s Fantastic Voyage ✨🎶

Lakeside, named after Dayton’s historic Lakeside Amusement Park, helped put the Gem City on the funk music map with their 1980 smash hit”Fantastic Voyage.” The song soared to No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart and remains one of the most iconic funk songs ever recorded.

Founded by Dayton musicians including Stephen Shockley, Mark Wood, and Thomas Shelby, Lakeside’s signature sound continues to influence generations through hip-hop samples, movie soundtracks like Johnson Family Vacation, and countless dance floors around the world. More than 40 years later,”Fantastic Voyage” is still taking listeners on a ride! 🎶

Original Members: Mark Wood, Stephen Shockley, Marvin Craig, Fred Lewis, Otis Stokes, Thomas Shelby, Fred Alexander, Tiemeyer McCain, Norman Beavers

Lakeside - Fantastic Voyage

Released: April 1980

Notable Tracks:
Fantastic Voyage
Your Love is on the One
Strung Out

Notes:
The Dayton Sound strikes again, but this time it found its way to the West Coast. Lakeside’s Fantastic Voyage was a connection of the Midwest Funk of the 70s and the smooth ultra-polished West Coast sound that would dominate the 80s and 90s. While we can’t ignore that the title track was later remade by Coolio in one of the 90s most iconic tracks, the album as a whole influenced the West Coast G-Funk sound. The heavy, syncopated slap bass, coupled with those smooth vocals laid the blueprint for artists like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Warren G.

This album, more so than most of the others on my essentials list, is dance forward. While the music is absolutely fantastic and skillful, there is no doubt that it’s made for the dance floor and isn’t apologetic about its identity. “Fantastic Voyage” would become Lakeside’s most successful and recognizable song, and for good reason; this is a masterclass in feel good dance funk. An infectious heavy bassline, driving horns, tight pocket drums, amazing vocals and fun-time lyrics are at the core of the song, which includes an early nod to hip-hop with its spoken word-intro. The remainder of the album is laid in a near perfect cadence for a listener/dancer. It’s made up of one or 2 energetic upbeat tracks and then a smooth soul song to bring the energy back down. Its worth mentioning, that of all the albums on my list, this might have my favorite collection of smooth songs; “I Need You” is mid-tempo and classic R&B, “Say Yes’ feels like that early quiet-storm and “I Love Everything You Do” is just a straightforward romantic love song.

Look, I know I recommend every album I ever talk about, but I have to put this one somewhere in the top 3 of my favorite funk albums. This is pure 80’s funk that just feels good. If you need an album for the weekend, this is the one.

Bonus Trivia: I really like pirates and Lakeside embraced the pirate theme with Fantastic Voyage which just gives them an extra few cool points! 🏴‍☠️
