Two decades ago, orthopedic surgeons were not taught much about orthobiologics in training (PRP,
shockwave therapy, etc). I include myself
among those trained skeptics when it came to regenerative orthobiologic treatments!

That was until I was confronted with my own very painful long-standing Achilles tendinitis. In fact, it came to the point where I could hardly walk down the operating room corridor without significant heel pain!! 😳🦶😩

At that time, nearly a decade ago, I was faced with the real prospect of having to have a large tendon repair surgery with a drawn-out recovery. As a busy orthopedic surgeon, I couldn’t take that amount of time off from my busy practice!

Then, in a fortunate turn of events, I was introduced to @otownpodiatry Dr Rob Conenello, a podiatrist in Orangeburg, NY who had been pioneering focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) modalities for the cure of foot and ankle conditions. Under this non-invasive approach, Dr. Conenello treated my Achilles tendonitis using a combination of focused shockwave AND radial shockwave along with magneto-transduction therapy (EMTT) for 3 sessions over the course of 3 weeks. Three months later, I was cured!! 🙌 🥳

Understanding the healing power of shockwave therapy firsthand, I felt I had a moral obligation to offer these same treatment options to my own orthopedic patients, many suffering from chronically painful conditions like shoulder rotator cuff tendonitis, tennis elbow, thumb arthritis, etc.

In our orthopedic practice, @modernorthonj, we now always offer focused and radial shockwave and EMTT therapies, when indicated.

A faster, non-invasive road to healing is a gift we have a duty to offer :)

Empowering Special Abilities Through Podiatric Screening: A Weekend of Service, Learning, and Inspiration

Dr. Robert Conenello, former president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, and a dedicated team of volunteers were honored to provide podiatric screenings for over 500 athletes at the 2025 Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games, held this past weekend at The College of New Jersey.

The event was not only a celebration of athleticism but also a powerful reminder of the resilience, spirit, and capability of these incredible athletes. At Orangetown Podiatry, we often say that these are not individuals with special needs—they are individuals with special abilities.

For the medical volunteers—ranging from seasoned physicians to students just beginning their careers—this was more than a screening opportunity. It was a rare and humbling chance to observe unique pathologies, collaborate with peers, and witness firsthand the joy and determination of athletes who compete without limits.

The Healthy Athletes initiative, which includes Fit Feet (podiatric screening), exemplifies how sports medicine can serve as a bridge between health equity and performance. As always, the experience left every member of our team inspired and grateful.

We thank the Special Olympics New Jersey for allowing us to be part of such a meaningful event and look forward to continuing to support these extraordinary athletes in every step they take.
