Looking back on last week’s inspiring event in Buffalo! ✨

Co-Artistic Directors Kari Conte and Kari Laansoo explored their vision for the inaugural Medina Triennial, from the artists and communities involved to the region’s cultural and ecological histories. The discussion was moderated by Aaron Ott, Curator of Public Art at Buffalo AKG Art Museum.

So many of you have asked how this mural came together—from securing the wall to the countless community hands that helped bring it to life. Aaron Ott, Curator of Public Art at Buffalo AKG, walks through the whole process in this short video.

And can we talk about how incredible it is for our city to have this resource? Buffalo AKG’s Public Art Initiative is the only independent public art department housed within a U.S. museum. It’s not just rare—it’s transformative for our community.

This kind of dedicated, artist-first infrastructure means local voices get seen and supported while Buffalo continues growing as a cultural and creative hub.

Girlhood; So Much Is Fortification

As the Hi Vis exhibition at the @buffaloakgartmuseum comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on what it has meant to me. I feel proud beyond words of my two pieces in the show and I believe they mark a notable shift in my work (both thematically and technically). In short I feel these two are some of my best yet! 🥹.

for the opportunity to make something so personal and have it shared with so many. I’m also grateful for the community of incredible artists I was fortunate to show alongside of!
And lastly, thank you to every single person who stood in front of “Motherhood/ Girlhood” and truly felt them. These paintings flowed from a place that at times, takes a lot to tap into. Motherhood is the role that both keeps me from the studio most and simultaneously inspires me to be back in it 💝
This piece, like so much of my work, is about the tension between two spaces and our ideas surrounding each; Softness and strength, innocence and power, Girlhood and Womanhood. My hope is that no matter who you are, you see familiarity in the works. Yourself, your daughter, your wife, your mother; It’s a call to honor women and to recognize their strength.

One of the best parts of the public art exhibition at @buffaloakgartmuseum is that we’re taking the message to the public.

There will be a series of billboards, bus stops, & on buses themselves all across the Erie County.

Similar to the series from 2014, this new version is a collage series, to better morph into all the various canvas sizes needed.

Dylan spotted this one, on our way to the airport.

Pretty wonderful to attend the preview of Hi-Vis at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. The show celebrates the 10 years of their public art program. You Are Beautiful kicked it off in 2014, and it was an honor to be back a decade later.
