Had such a fun time on Islander. Never thought I’d get the chance to stage manage a loop pedal musical that’s in the round but here we are! And one of my favourite musicals with a wonderful team too!! Thanks to everyone.

ISLANDER | Opening Night 🌊🎭🎶

Some experiences remind you why you do the work you do, and opening night of ISLANDER was one of them.

As the Creative Cultural Consultant on this award-winning Scottish musical, I’ve had the opportunity to bring Samoan culture into a story beyond my own community. As a Samoan playwright and screenwriter, so much of my work is rooted in our stories, language and lived experiences. To share that knowledge in a mainstream theatre space, including translating a song into Samoan, has been a meaningful step in my creative journey. It has meant asking questions, finding connections, and considering what it looks like for Samoan culture to help tell a story that comes from somewhere else. It’s been a balancing act without losing sight of where it comes from or who we are.

Our languages deserve to be heard on these stages, too. One reviewer described ISLANDER as “a thoughtful act of recontextualisation that makes real space for Pasifika voices. A beautiful reminder that this work isn’t about adding culture for aesthetics, but creating space for culture to be understood, respected and lived.”

Fa’afetai tele lava to @atyp_theatre and the incredible village of humans who brought this beautiful production to life. There are really no small roles in bringing a story to life. And from the diversity within our team (First Nations, Samoan, Chinese, Filipino, Spanish, Italian and more) is proof that a good story can be told by anyone when we work together. And can be told by many cultural lenses.

To my ride-or-dies, my Pasifika village and the creatives leading, writing and making space for others within our community: thank you for pushing and reminding me that we belong here, too. And thank you for gifting my production village with our own ‘ua fa’afetai’ moment, a short lauga by @manurua_au and the gifting of kahoas made by @craftssbymk 😭

Our stories matter. Our languages matter. And our voices belong on every stage. ISLANDER season ends this Saturday, 17th October.

Can two performers bring an entire community to life? Islander proves they absolutely can.

With extraordinary vocal looping, beautiful harmonies and some wonderfully inventive storytelling, ATYP transforms a simple stage into an entire island, complete with its people, histories and mythology. And a whale calf! 🐳

Georgia Laga’aia and Ellie Chan are fantastic, effortlessly shifting between characters and giving an entire island community its own distinctive life. At the heart of it all is the unlikely friendship between Eilidh and Arran, brought to life with warmth, humour and genuine emotional depth. Under Hayden Tonazzi’s direction, this is musical theatre at its most imaginative.

But beneath the magic is something rather profound.

Islander explores what it means to belong. To a place. To a community. To the natural world. And whether we’ve forgotten just how inseparable those connections really are.

It’s clever, charming and beautifully performed, with music that deserves particular praise.

It takes just two performers to remind an entire audience that none of us exists alone.
