When I walked over to Otuhan at the @sadnightmarket, my eyes lit up. Red lanterns hanging from the tree, sun beaming through the smoke of yakitori grilling - it made me feel like I’d stepped right into a little restaurant in Japan. You only hear great things about this place. Next time you see them, give it a try 🥢

I’ll die on this hill: People who choose to cook for a living deserve the world.

I’ve been very fortunate over the last month to spend time with some amazing chefs whose operations range from exclusive intimate tasting menu to pop-ups on the curb. Despite the change in setting, one thing remains constant.

They love what they do.

They have to, they must.

Being a chef, a person who feeds the masses, requires a staggering amount of work with minimal sleep, infrequent time with the family, and more time on your feet each week than the average marathoner. Not to mention the cuts, burns, rashes, sunburns, sprained joints, and other maladies that come with the discipline. Are they handsomely compensated for damaging their bodies, relationships, and sleep schedule? - all too often the answer is no. These irrationally passionate, funny, and creatively foul-mouthed humans are part of the fabric of society that make life worth living. A good meal can change the course of a day, week, month, year. Be it from your auntie or someone with their name on the door. People who cook make space for you and I to unplug. To have one less thing to worry about. To feel taken care of.

So I say again, these people deserve the world. I thank them for letting me peek into their world and hope I can continue to do so.
