Was able to dine in @myshawarma.1 recently for the first time. I’ve order plenty of take out, but specifically wanted to try their injera platter so I knew that would have to be eaten in the restaurant. Their operation is set up mainly as a take out restaurant, but there are a few tables for dining in! This Afro-Arab restaurant opened last November & is such a welcomed addition to the Anchorage food scene. If you haven’t checked them out yet I highly recommend that you do! It’s the only spot in Anchorage that serves shawarma (the cousin to Turkish doner kebab & Greek gyro).

We ordered the lamb injera plate, the mixed shawarma plate & 3 sambusa. The injera plate was a massive portion & everything on it was delicious. Sadly I’m not super well versed in Somalian cuisine so I don’t know exactly what different curries were served with the injera & completely forgot to ask. I do know flavor though & this platter was packed with plenty of it. The food was rich with spices. The mixed shawarma plate came with chicken, lamb & beef. The portion on this platter was also extremely generous. I also love their garlic sauce & zhug.

If you are looking for a meal with generous portions for a good price, and plenty of flavor then you need to go visit My Shawrma House!

“I hope for the day where the pressures of coming out don’t exist, where we live in a society where people just get to live as their authentic selves.” – Brooks Banker, a violence prevention specialist and educator, drag performer by the name Golden Delicious, actor, and producer – to name a few of their titles.

You may have seen Golden Delicious taking the stage at @madmyrnasak in their dazzling drag queen looks, but Brooks wears many hats including being a strong advocate for queer and gender-varying people. In their role as Prevention and Education Specialist at @star.alaska, they lead community presentations on root causes of violence as well as age appropriate curricula with K-12th graders on bodily autonomy and personal safety. Brooks encourages us to continue to build a world that is safe for all queer people. #PrideTalk
