POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

as i evolve in my thinking and belief systems, especially as a writer and healer — i am aware of how much power words hold.

i’m a true believer that words really mean things. i speak to and of myself how i intend to be spoken to. this next example (work) became more intentional for me once i transitioned out of corporate and realized i no longer wanted to subject myself to the labor force through the lens of capitalism

are there any words you have removed from your vocabulary? share em below!

can i be honest? i was going to wait to post this. im trying to find the perfect story & hook to ease you all into my herbalism journey. but the truth is, today i forgot to take my prescribed medication for inattention/anxiety and the impacts put a damper on my day.

so im here to start with: that’s a huge reason i am taking this journey more serious. it sucks to have to rely on medication to have what others would consider a “normal” day. it sucks to have to remember to pop a pill, as opposed to genuinely incorporating herbs into my routine (which is already a heavy part of my Caribbean culture).

i do many things. all with striving to one overall purpose.
yes, i am a writer. yes, i am a movement guide (& yoga instructor). and YES, i am an herbalist in training.

all in alignment with my purpose: to heal

welcome to my journey (again) 🫶🏾

here are a few words i no longer intend to use in my vocabulary! as i evolve in my thinking and belief systems, especially as a writer and healer — i am aware of how much power words hold.

i’m a true believer that words really mean things. i speak to and of myself how i intend to be spoken to. this first example (sorry or i’m sorry) has been one i’ve been implementing for a few years now. of course there are some exceptions where maybe i genuinely do feel sorry about something. but i promise they are still limited 🤣

also as a NYer, you will get a “my fault” out of me before i say sorry 😭

are long videos still cool?

idc the message is in the video — DOCUMENT YOUR LIFE, REFLECT ON YOUR THOUGHTS. WRITE, RECORD, TAKE PICS.

i promise your soul and spirit already knows who you are and has probably been giving you signs all along. just listen and have fun finding your Easter eggs along the way pumpkin 🫶🏾

peace,
love MK <3

how can we still show up for ourselves through discomfort?

sometimes giving ourselves too many steps to perfection and completion hinders the actual progress.

i decide to practice before i decide to record. then i make the decision to capture the moment because i’m going to move my body with or without the camera regardless.

life was never meant to be perfect. learning to regulate your nervous system is about meeting the moment you are in.

so do me a favor…next time you experience a moment of overwhelm?

pause. sit in it. acknowledge the emotion. call it by its name and then decide what a practical next step can be. not the next 10 steps. just one, my love 🫶🏾

peace,

On a flight back to ATL, still buzzing from the beautiful energy of celebrating Creative Stillness: The Anthology.

Watching @dhayanalejandrina navigate the waves of this creative process has filled me with so much gratitude for the hard work, intention, and care poured into this piece of art. Hearing the authors read their work, meeting them in person, and embracing them felt like reuniting with soul family.

Being in NY was a testament to the power of speaking desires into existence. I remember having conversations about wanting to share my poetry and one day be published in a book. To stand there and celebrate that desire becoming reality was emotional and deeply fulfilling.

Thank you, Dhayana, for creating such a beautiful community. And thank you to the authors and members of @thecreativewritinghour for embracing me and my poem, which holds such a special place in my heart.

My heart is full. ✨📖🤎

things i have been doing to hold myself in this season:

🌿 stopped talking. when i speak aloud or to people around me, i notice an automatic tendency to defend myself or oversell/over explain my experiences. being silent has actually been allowing my nervous system to tell me the truth before my brain can intellectualize

🌿 paused on daily journaling. i just poured my heart out into a manuscript on love. im back in my dilly dally era. what feels good in my body? what form and shape would my body like to take right now? where is Spirit leading me to go live a little? i’ve been in a healing era for so long, that i just wanna expose myself to the raw feelings of life again.

🌿 move. i have had to redefine my relationship to movement in this season. instead of hip openers to maintain a state of being, i have shifted focus to my cervical injury. this has left me no choice but to trust my soul and face trauma being stored in my shoulders

🌿 affirm myself. as a full-time writer and wellness founder, my strides and accomplishments looks different than others. when i achieve a goal, complete tasks and feel great joy? i applaud myself before anyone else.
“i am so proud of you Makayla”
“we did it. we are doing it”
“you go girl”

i no longer wait for that validation. i no longer beg to be seen. i give it to myself, in that moment, immediately. anything that comes after is only in surplus.

any of the above resonate with you?

note to self: creators need to be poured into. we already release and feed others often through our art. save yourself. preserve your soul. we can receive and be cared for too. 🫶🏾

thank you @alex_elle for such a timely reminder.

one thing i still struggle with along my healing journey is the need to seek permission from outside people in an effort to affirm what my spirit and body already knows. as many times as i have accepted that i was not placed on Earth to live a “typical” life, i still find myself feeling guilty, lost and unsure of my path.

we can know what know, yet still allow others to infiltrate our thoughts and beliefs. the more we prolong fulfilling our purpose and executing visions solely given TO US, the more we are prone to silent suffering and misalignment.

this is often why i spend so much time by myself and seated in nature. SILENCE and STILLNESS keep me grounded and quiets the outside noise.

has anybody else struggled with this? any tips for unlearning the need to “seek” permission? asking for a friend 🥲

on this week’s episode of: frequenting cafe’s until i…” — currently, it’s finishing this manuscript! ✍🏾

mini review:
• one of the coziest/homey vibes i have experienced in a cafe this far
• very comfy and inviting seating, music was calm and actually felt like an atmosphere to study/work in
• would recommend pulling up earlier in the day before the kiddos get outta school
• pretty solid menu options & they have a display case set up like a corner store (as a Brooklyn kid that part was very nostalgic lol)

what i ordered:
* ☕️ i actually don’t recall lolll
* 🥪 avocado toast w/ turkey bacon (3/5)
